Metacognitive reading report

Refer to the work of Lewis Wolpert entitled The Medawar Lecture 1998 Is Science

Read the article and answer the following questions:

1. What were Wolpert’s major points and support to his claims?

 He believe that science is not dangerous, instead people/s are dangerous.

2. Does he believe that science and technology is dangerous?

 Definitely NO

3. What were his ideas regarding eugenics, cloning, and stem cells? Do you agree or disagree on
his points regarding these issues? Why or why not?
 Mr. Wolpert is aware about the GMO were scientists put some genes in plants or in
crops in order to help them grow , and it might lead to people develop illness when they
eat a certain vegetables/crops with GMO.

4. What role does the public play in the purported dangers (or lack thereof) of science and
technology?
 Science has no ethical content in it. It’s About how people use or manipulate it.

5. What role does politics play in the purported dangers (or lack Thereof) of science and
technology?
 In my own opinion science and technology was related to politics since politicians wants
to have the power and almost control the world they think different ways on how to
conquer and achieve the power they want by making war between countries. What did
science and technology ? Well , guns/weapons, atomic bombs.
6. What three concepts from the article will you never forget?
 Science provides the best way of understanding the world in a reliable, logical, testable,
quantitative and elegant manner.

7. What three realizations did you have after reading the article? State Your answer in the
following manner: Before reading the article I Thought… However after reading, I can now say
that I learned…
 Before reading the Article I thought science is really bad for the people and the earth
and in my personal thinking why there is science if it will only destroy the environment?
But after reading the article I can now say that science is not bad nor dangerous.

8. What three things are still unclear to you after reading the article?
 I am still curious in one thing, and that is how come people abused the use of science
and technology , is it because they want to save the world and the people? Or it’s for
their own sake/ own pleasures?
