4. Fault Isolation

NOTE: An increase in N1 vibration levels can occur immediately after the LP compressor blade lubrication.
The N1 vibration levels usually decrease as the LP compressor blades move in to a stable position.
Thus a trim balance of too short a time after the blade lubrication could possibly not be the solution to a
high N1 vibration.

NOTE: It is recommended that a trim balance is not done in less than ten flight cycles of the LP compressor
blade lubrication. If the N1 vibration levels are too high for further operation, it is recommended that the
LP compressor blades are cleaned and lubricated.

Subtask 77-00-00-810-075-A
A. Do the inspections that follow:
(1) Examine the Master Magnetic Chip Detector (MCD) Ref. AMM 79-00-00-200-805 or if the Electronic
Magnetic Chip Detector (EMCD) is connected, do a check of the Post Flight Report (PFR) for related
Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitoring (ECAM) messages or maintenance messages.
(2) Visually examine the starter air lower duct to make sure that there are no signs of cracks around the
circumferential welds of the coupling flanges at the pneumatic starter and the starter control valve.
Subtask 77-00-00-810-076-A
B. Examine the Engine
(1) Examine the LP compressor blades Ref. AMM 72-31-41-200-801 .
(2) Examine the LP compressor annulus fillers Ref. AMM 72-31-41-200-807 .
(3) Examine the LP compressor air intake and spinner fairing Ref. AMM 72-35-41-200-801 .
(4) Examine the turbine exhaust cases, the exhaust cone and the Common Nozzle Assembly (CNA).
(a) Look for damage/unwanted material on the external surfaces of the turbine exhaust cases.
(b) Look for damage/unwanted material on the surface of the exhaust cone.
(c) Look for damage/unwanted material on the internal surface of the CNA.
(5) If you find damage or unwanted material:
(a) Remove the unwanted material and identify the cause of the damage or unwanted material.
(b) If repair actions are permitted, do the applicable repair(s).
(c) If repair actions are not permitted, replace the power plant Ref. AMM 71-00-00-000-805 and
Ref. AMM 71-00-00-400-805 .
(d) If you think that core engine damage can also have occurred, do the inspection after a birdstrike
or foreign object damage Ref. AMM 71-00-00-200-803 .
(6) If you find no fault, continue the procedure from step 4. C.
Subtask 77-00-00-810-181-A
C. Find the LP compressor blade maintenance history:
(1) If the LP compressor blade maintenance was done in less than 20 flight cycles before the flight,
continue the procedure from step 4.F.
(2) If the LP compressor blade maintenance was done in more than 20 flight cycles before the flight,
continue the procedure from step 4.D.

accelerometers are in the permitted limits of 0.3 ins/sec.
(a) If the difference between the vibration levels given by the two accelerometers (N1 ACCLRM A
and N1 ACCLRM B) are less than 0.3 ins/sec:
1 Continue the procedure from step 4.F.
(b) If the difference between the vibration levels given by the two accelerometers are more than 0.3
ins/sec:
1 Continue the procedure from step 4.E.
Subtask 77-00-00-810-122-A
E. If the difference between the vibration levels given by the two accelerometers are not in the permitted

G. Do a Check to see when the LP compressor lubrication was done before the next flight:
(1) If the lubrication of the LP compressor was done before the next flight, do as follows:
(a) If the N1 vibration levels are more than 5 ACUs, (1.5 ins/sec peak velocity) or too high for further
operation, continue the procedure from step 4.L.
(b) If the lubrication was done in less than 20 flight cycles before the next flight, continue the
procedure from step 4.J.
(c) If the lubrication was done in less than 600 flight cycles before the next flight, but not less than 20
flight cycles, continue the procedure from step 4.K.
(d) If the lubrication was done in no less than 600 flight cycles, continue the procedure from step 4.L.
(2) If the LP compressor blade lubrication is not known before the next flight, do as follows:
(a) If the N1 vibration levels are not more than 5 ACUs (1.5 ins/sec peak velocity), continue this fault
isolation procedure from step 4.H.
(b) If the N1 vibration levels are more than 5 ACUs (1.5 ins/sec peak velocity), continue this fault
isolation procedure from step 4.L.
Subtask 77-00-00-810-186-A
H. Continue for a maximum of three flight cycles if the checks that follow are completed each day:
(1) A check of the Master MCD Ref. AMM 79-00-00-200-805 .
(2) The engine starts and operates successfully Ref. AMM 71-00-00-860-810 .
(3) The maximum vibration level is not more than 5 ACUs on the subsequent flights.
(4) After three flight cycles, continue the procedure from step 4.M.
Subtask 77-00-00-810-183-A
J. Continue to monitor N1 vibration levels in service for ten flight cycles.
(1) If the N1 vibration has not decreased after 10 flight cycles:
(a) Remove the LP compressor blades and dampers Ref. AMM 72-31-41-000-801 .
(b) Remove the layer of dry film lubricant that was applied on the LP compressor blade roots and LP
compressor disc.

(d) Install the LP compressor blades and dampers Ref. AMM 72-31-41-400-801 .

NOTE: If a step change in the N1 vibration levels has been seen, the maintenance activity may
have caused the higher vibration levels. The lubrication of the fan set and/or the position
of the blades changed are tasks that can cause short-term increased vibration levels.

NOTE: An increase in the LP vibration levels can occur immediately after the LP compressor
blade lubrication. The N1 vibration levels usually decrease as the LP compressor blades
move to a stable position. Thus a trim balance at too short a time after blade lubrication
could possibly not be the solution to high N1 vibration levels. It is recommended that a
