DIALOGUE ANALYSIS : THE BRAVE

BRAVE ( 2012 )

Merida, Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor's impetuous but courageous daughter, is a skilled
archer who wants to carve out her own life path. Her defiance of an age-old tradition angered the lords
of the Highlands, leading to the kingdom's chaos. Merida is seeking help from an excentric witch, who
offers her an unexpected wish. Now, before it's too late, Merida has to discover the true meaning of
courage and undo a beastly curse.
DO EACH OF THE CHARACTER HAVE DIFFERENT RHYTHM?

Yes, their a different of the character Rhythm example :

1. MERIDA

Merida is a very bold, brave, daring, courageous, stubborn, rebellious, and headstrong girl who does
not fit the stereotypical princess role. Rather than being a young woman in distress who is subject to
the customs, traditions and social constraints that her society places on her and expects her to follow.
Merida is actively rebelling and defying her identity as a princess and wishes nothing more than to be a
normal girl.

2. QUEEN ELINOR

While her mother, Queen Elinor is a very strict and stubborn authoritarian figure in the life of Merida.
She calls for Merida to follow in her footsteps as a queen and to follow her kingdom's customs and
traditions. Despite Merida's desire for freedom and independence, despite conflicting ideas, she only
wishes her daughter the best. This causes a strain on the relationship between her and her daughter.
Her ignorance stifles Merida's true self in her quest for tradition and responsibility.
2. KING FERGUS

King Fergus is a loud and simple guy. He's a very kind person, and he's very friendly and getting along
quite well with others. He and his wife's complete opposite in that he doesn't keep to tradition as strictly
as she does and enjoy having fun with his family. He does have a temper, sometimes getting annoyed
with his triplet sons and lords ' antics, but he knows how to have a good time and can be quite polite.
However, he is also a wise ruler and knows when to be serious.
THE DIALOG IN THE SCENE
Each scene and dialog reveals the education, age, cultural and ethnic background of the story
example ;

QUEEN ELINOR
The Dialog in the Scene that I analysis, reveals cultural and ethnic. She wanted her daughter princess
Merida to follow in her footsteps as a queen and to follow her kingdom's customs and traditions. She
also has named herself as the sole mentor of Merida, showing a vast knowledge of the ways and
education a princess has to ascend to her position as a queen and she only wishes her daughter the
best.

BASED ON THE SCENE THAT DIALOGUE SHOWS CONFLICT

Based on the scene that Dialog shows conflict in Brave is the intra-group dispute within the family of
Merida. Although the film's main focus is on Merida and her mother, the conflict also involves the rest
of the family and is based on family issues rather than personal issues, mainly the conflict between the
values of Merida and the need for independence set against the values of Elinor. Merida values
independence, equality and ability, while Elinor values responsibility and humble behaviour. Merida
wants to follow her own heart, while Elinor worries that the role of her family might be destroyed. This
kind of conflict is very common in relationships between teenagers and parents and can cause both
sides to feel isolated, attacked, and misunderstood. These feelings are the reason that in the first place
Merida is looking for the witch, not a good strategy for coping. Merida only avoids her problem by
leaving and simply makes it worse. Her return to the castle also presents a new conflict based on her
father’s misunderstanding (thinking Elinor is an actual bear), showing how such failures in
communication can escalate conflict. But it also presents one of the first positive steps towards solving
her conflict.
DOES THE DIALOGUE IN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND EASILY UNDERSTANDABLE TO
AUDIENCE?

Nope, The dialogue in Brave are not in appropriate language and almost all age groups can
understand the movie storytelling massage and easily understandable to audience. The dialog also not
to hard for kid to understanding about this storytelling and it’s also organized. But it may not suitable
for children especially under 7 years old because involve a large angry bear that attacks the main
characters and mostly comical transformation of a mother into a bear. A moment when the mom-
turned-bear temporarily forgets she's human and growls at her daughter could upset younger kids.

DOES THE DIALOGUE IN THE SCENE SHOWS EMOTION IN CHARACTER?

Yes, the dialogue in brave scene have shows the character's emotions. For example, the scene Merida
show happy emotion playing chasing with her mother Queen Elinor when she little.
Next, this scene shows Queen Elinor release Anger emotion to Merida that she don’t want to listen her
mother and Merida also don’t want to follow her footsteps as a queen and to follow her kingdom's
customs and traditions.
Last but not least, the scene Merida shows her Sad emotion that her mother completely change into
real bear.
