The scale of a map is often given as a ratio . For example a scale of 1 : 200,000
Means that 1 cm on the map is 200,000 cm or 2000m or 2km on the ground .
EXAMPLE 1 : A plan of house may be drawn to a scale of 1:50.This means
that 1 :cm on the plan is equivalent to 50 cm on the ground.

EXAMPLE 2 : A scale plan of the room is drawn to a scale of 1 : 50 .The room


Is 8 cm long on the plan.
