Background Information

Finding the Area of Composite Figures

A composite figure is a figure made up of more than one shape. The area of
a composite figure is obtained by adding all the areas of the shapes that make up the
composite figure.
Example 1:

Find the area of the following figure.

2cm

2cm 10cm

2cm
8cm

6cm
Step 1: Split the figure into parts by drawing lines to reveal the shapes.

Label the shapes for easy reference

2cm

2cm 10cm
A

2cm
8cm
B

6cm
Step 2: Calculate the area of each part.

Area of Square = 𝐴2 (A) 2 Χ 2 = 4 𝑐𝑚2

Area of rectangle = L Χ W (B) 12Χ 6= 72 𝑐𝑚2
1 1
Area of triangle = bh (C) (6 Χ 4) = 12 𝑐𝑚2
2 2
Step 3: Add the areas of all parts

Area of composite figure = area of A + area of B + area of C

= 4 𝑐𝑚2 + 72 𝑐𝑚2 + 12 𝑐𝑚2

=𝟖𝟖 𝒄𝒎𝟐

Therefore, the area of the composite figure is 𝟖𝟖 𝒄𝒎𝟐

Example 2:
Find the area of the shaded region.

Step 1: Find the area of the whole figure. In this case, let us find the area of the
rectangle.
24m

16 m

Area of rectangle = length Χ width

= 24 m Χ 16 m

= 384𝑚2

Step 2: Find the area of the unshaded parts. The unshaded parts in the figure
are a circle and a semicircle (half-circle). (𝜋 = 3.14)

1
Area of a circle = 𝜋𝑟 2 area of semicircle = 2 𝜋𝑟 2
1
= 3.14 Χ 82 = 2 Χ 3.14 Χ 82
1
= 3.14 Χ 64 = 2 Χ 200.96

= 200.96 𝑚2 = 100.48 𝑚2

Area of unshaded region = 200. 96 + 100.48 = 301.44 𝑚2

Step 3: To get the area of the shaded region, subtract the area of the unshaded
region from the area of the whole figure.
Area of shaded region = area of whole figure – area of unshaded region

= 384 𝑚2 – 301.44 𝑚2
= 82. 56 𝒎𝟐
Therefore, the area of the shaded region is 82. 56 𝒎𝟐 .

Solving Problems Involving Composite figures

In solving a word problem, we answer the following guide questions:

• What are the given facts?

• What is asked in the problem?
• What are the operations to be used?
• What is the number sentence?
• What is the answer to the problem?

Example 1:

A group of students is making square signposts for a parade. The dimensions

are shown below. What is the total area of the signboard?

50 cm

21 cm

10 cm

• What are the given facts?

50 cm
50 cm 21 cm

10 cm
21 cm

10 cm
• What is asked in the problem?
The total area of the signboard.
• What are the operations to be used?
The operations to be used are multiplication and addition.
• What is the number sentence?
Area of signboard = area of square + area of the rectangle
Area of square = 𝑠2
Area of rectangle = LW
• What is the answer to the problem?
Area of square = 𝑠2
= 50 cm Χ 50 cm
= 2500 𝑐𝑚2
Area of the rectangle = LW
= 10 cm Χ 21 cm = 210 𝑐𝑚2

Area of the signboard = 2500 𝑐𝑚2 + 210 𝑐𝑚2

= 2710 𝑐𝑚2

Therefore, the total area of the signboard is 2710 𝑐𝑚2 .

Example 2:

Taylor cuts a circle with a diameter of 4 cm from a square origami paper whose
side measures 7 cm. What is the area of the paper left after cutting out the circle?

• What are the given facts?

7cm

4 cm

• What is asked in the problem?

The area of the paper left after cutting out the circle.
• What are the operations to be used?
The operations to be used are multiplication and
subtraction.
• What is the number sentence?
Area of the paper left = area of the square – area of circle
Area of square = 𝑠 2
Area of circle = 𝜋𝑟 2
• What is the answer to the problem?
Area of the square = 𝑠 2
= 7 cm Χ 7 cm
= 49 𝑐𝑚2
Area of circle = 𝜋𝑟 2
= 3.14 Χ 2 cm Χ 2 cm
= 12.56 𝑐𝑚2
Area of the paper left = 49 𝑐𝑚2 - 12.56 𝑐𝑚2
= 36.44 𝒄𝒎𝟐

Therefore, the area of the paper left after cutting the circle is 36.44 𝒄𝒎𝟐
