FRANCIS OF ASSISI AT A GLANCE


1180/81– St. Francis is born in Assisi, Italy.
1204/1205 – Vision and message at Spolete on his way to Apulia for war.
1205– Message from the Crucifix of San Damiano.
1208– The gospel of the feast of St. Mathias inspires him to become a preacher.
1208– The first followers of St. Francis, Bernard and Peter Catanii, join him.
1209 – St. Francis receives an oral approval of his rule from Pope Innocent III.
1209/1210– The beginning of the Third Order.
1212–St. Clare is received into the Order on Palm Sunday at the Portiuncula.
1215– St. Francis participates in the Fourth Lantern Council.
1216 – St. Francis obtains the Portiuncula Indulgence from Pope Honorius III.
1217– The friars go beyond the Alps and overseas as missionaries.
1219 – St. Francis visits Sultan.
1221 - The Rule of the Third Order is approved by Honorius III.
1223– Pope Honorius III approves the Rule of Friars Minor.
1223, December 24/25 – St. Francis makes the first Christmas Crib at Greccio.
1224 – Francis receives the Stigmata about September 14.
1226, Oct. 3. – St. Francis breaths his last and is buried at San Giorgio Church.
1228, July 16. –Pope Gregory IX canonizes St. Francis.
1230, May 25. – Translation of the Saint’s remains to his new basilica, San Francesco.
