Competency Based Questions

1. Amit is a student of class 9th. His neighbour used to complain that he was
not getting pure milk. But the man who was supplying the milk said that
the milk was pure. Amit knew how to test the purity of milk. Brought the
lactometer and tested the milk. He told the man supplying milk not to
cheat his neighbour. Set the following questions based on the above
paragraph.
i) On what principle lactometer works?
ii) State the principle also.
iii) Give any two examples where this principle is applied.

2. A stone is dropped from the top of a tower 500 m high into a pond of
water at the base of the tower. When is the splash heard at the top?
Given g=10m/s2and speed of sound=340m/s

3. Earth attracts Apple from the tree and it falls on it but the earth does not
move towards the Apple. Why?

4. Why do artificially launched satellite lose height with time?

5. When a body escape from the earth’s gravitational pull where does it go?

6. What is gravitational wave?

7. Anita and Sunita were good friends. They had gone to a coastal site for
walking. Anita was wearing flat surfaces chappal and Sunita was wearing
a high heel chappal. On the Sandy surface Sunita was feeling
uncomfortable while walking. Anita helped her to walk for some time on
the Sandy surface. Thereafter both of them returned back. Anita asked
Sunita not to wear high heel chappal while walking on a Sandy surface.
Answer the following questions based on the above paragraph.
i) Why was Sunita feeling uncomfortable while walking on the
Sandy surface?
ii) Which type of chappal is suitable for walking on the Sandy
surface and why?
iii) Camel walk easily on the Sandy surface explain why?

8. The elongation of rubber tied from a stone decreases as the stone is

immersed in water explain why? (see following figures)
Questions for PISA

Question Number 1
Buoyancy
Have you ever had a swim in a pool and felt lighter? Have you ever drawn water
from a well and felt that the bucket of water is heavier when it is out of the water?
Have you ever wondered why a ship made of iron and steel does not sink in sea
water but while the same amount of Iron and Steel in the form of sheet would Sink?
These questions can be answered by taking buoyancy in consideration.
If we try to push an empty bottle inside the water we feel an upward force on our
hand this force trying to push up the bottle in upward direction. Now release the
bottle it bounces back to the surface. The force due to the gravitational attraction
of the earth acts on the bottle in the downward direction. So the bottle is pulled
downwards. But the water exerts an upward force on the bottle. Thus the bottle is
pushed upwards. When the bottle is immersed the upward force exerted by the
water in the bottle is greater than its weight. Therefore it rises up when released.
To keep the bottle completely immersed the upward force on the bottle due to
water must be balanced. This can be achieved by an externally applied force acting
downwards. This force must be at least be equal to the difference between the
upward force and the weight of the bottle.
The upward force exerted by the water on the bottle is known as up thrust force or
buoyant force. In fact all objects experience a force of buoyancy when they are
immersed in a fluid. The magnitude of these buoyant force depends on the density
of the fluid.

Question no.2
Weightlessness
Weightlessness is a condition when our body is in free fall and the acceleration is
downward at gravity. This condition can be defined by the term zero gravity. So
weightlessness occurs when there is zero support of force on our body.
Weightlessness is a situation in which the gravitational force is zero. We feel
weight because the ground exerts an equal and opposite force on our body after
our body exerts a force on the ground due to gravitational attraction.
Now when falling freely under gravity there is no solid thing which can exert a
force on us which does makes us feel to be having weightlessness. In general the
ground exerts equal and opposite force on you and hence you feel the weight and
in the same way if you fall freely we feel being weightless.

Question 2.1
