SAS 16

1. B - Lipase hydrolyses or breaks down fat into fatty acids and glycerol. Lipase is not
involved with the transport of fatty acids into the brush border. Fat itself triggers
cholecystokinin release. Protein breakdown into dipeptides and amino acids is the function
of trypsin, not lipase.
2. C - Chronic pancreatitis typically results from repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis.
More than half of chronic pancreatitis cases are associated with alcoholism.
3. C - The pancreas is part of the digestive system. It secretes enzymes that help the body
break down foods, and it also releases hormones such as insulin so the body can convert
food into energy.
4. D - The most common cause of pancreatitis is gallstones. Other cause may include over
consumption of alcohol and by genetic disorder
5. C - The main sign of pancreatitis is pain in the upper mid-abdomen. This pain may range
from mild to severe, it may have a sudden onset or it may develop slowly, and the pain
may spread across the upper abdomen and into the back.
