Module 2: State, Borders, and Power

A government's power is limited by its borders. People who live within a country's
borders must abide by its laws and pay its taxes. Border security, economic growth, and
national sovereignty all depend on preventing the unlawful movement of firearms,
drugs, contraband, and people while supporting lawful trade and travel. If they relocate
or travel to another country, they must be familiar with and follow the laws of that
country. Some lines divide people who live in distinct ways.
Every country has its borders and power. In conflict and trade, in war and peace,
borders both facilitate and hinder human connection. Former President Barack Obama
once said, "We are defined not by our borders, but by our bonds." I do believe that
someday world peace will come. There are still territorial disputes, wars, and
misunderstandings between countries over boundaries, resources, and territories
because it is frequently linked to the ownership of natural resources such as rivers, rich
farmland, minerals, or crude oil resources, however, it can also be motivated by culture,
religion, and ethnic nationalism. The discussion of Ma'am Christine has enlightened me
more about the difference between State and Nation. Before I didn't know the difference
between them, I thought they are synonymously related to each other, but they are not.
A nation is a group of people who share a common language, history, culture, and
region. And, a state is a group of people united by government institutions. Ma'am
Christine's lecture was instructive since she shared with us various global topics that are
related to our lessons, such as the state, boundaries, and power. However, I wish she
had covered with us certain aspects relevant to the topic, such as identifying what State
Actors and Non-State Actors could be involved in the prominent state. The module that
was given to us, on the other hand, was very informative and worth reading, even
though I sometimes get drowsy when reading, but not this time because the topic that I
was reading is what I want to know and go deeper in understanding. Though our
professor didn't address certain key points of the course, the module that was provided
to us has covered the areas that were not discussed.
Lastly, due to the current challenges that we face throughout the world, the
course that was discussed was very interesting and helpful to study. Even though this is
not my major course, it is beneficial to learn and be aware of it. This is a clear
recognition that the greatest solution to these global concerns is unity, peace
negotiations, and transparent communication. And I always hope that one day the world
will be at peace.
