STANDARD Issued 2001-10
1. Scope—This SAE Standard identifies the material and dimensional requirements for component connector
tubes and related items for use in fluid power components. Connector tubes are also identified as quills,
ferrules or transfer tubes. Connector tubes are used to connect fluid passages within a component or to
connect one component to another; for example, connecting control valves to subplates. Related items
include plugs, undrilled connector tubes and connector tubes for internal check valves and restrictors.
1.1 Field of Application—While used in many high-pressure hydraulic component applications, connector tubes
are suitable for use in a wide application of fluid system components. Connector tubes and related
components covered in this document are considered suitable for maximum operating pressures of 21 MPa
(3045 psi). (See 5.3)

3. Requirements
3.1 Configurations and Dimensional Requirements—For configurations and dimensional requirements see the
applicable Figure and Table as listed as follows. Dimensions in figures are in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
3.2 Part Identification Number (PIN)—Connector tubes shall be specified by part identification numbers as
established in Figure 5. The part identification numbers described in Figure 5 provide a unique identification
number for each connector tube that identifies size, body configuration, and material composition.

1.For these configurations, dimensions “K” and “L” may not fully meet the recommendations of the manufacturer of the inserts.
(See 5.4.) Ends of the valves and safety screens may protrude beyond the ends of the connector tubes and require care in
handling and installation to prevent damage. Connecting passages must provide sufficient clearance for the protruding ends; i.e.,
at least equal to the maximum ØB 1 and ØB 2 dimensions, as applicable.
3.3.1 C OMPOSITION A—These connector tubes and related items shall be aluminum alloy 6061 (UNS A96061)
temper T6510 or T6511 in accordance with AMS-QQ-A-200/8 or temper T651 in accordance with or AMS-
QQ-A-225/8.
3.3.2 C OMPOSITION F—These connector tubes and related items shall be corrosion resisting steel class 416 (UNS
S41600) in accordance with ASTM A 582/A 582M Condition T.
3.3.3 C OMPOSITION S—These connector tubes shall be made of corrosion resisting steel class 304 (UNS S30400),
316 (UNS S31600) or 316L (UNS S31603) in accordance with SAE AMS 5647 or AMS-QQ-S-763. Other
corrosion resisting steels having at least equivalent strength and corrosion resistance may be used when
specifically approved by the contracting activity.
3.3.4 C OMPOSITION T—These connector tubes shall be made of Titanium alloy (UNS R56401) AB-1 in accordance
with MIL-T-81556 or Ti-6Al-4V (UNS R56400) in accordance with SAE AMS 4928.
3.5 Surface Finish—Unless otherwise specified in the applicable Figures, surface roughness shall be 3.2 µm
(125µin) in accordance with ASME B46.1.
-9-
SAE J24714 Issued OCT2001
3.6 Part Number Marking—Connector tubes and related items shall be marked on one end with the applicable
specification based part identification number (PIN) and on the other end with the manufacturer's Commercial
and Government Entity Code (CAGEC). For items less than 25.4 mm (1.000 in) in diameter, the PIN may be
marked on the outside diameter rather than the end and inclusion of the CAGEC is optional. Marking shall be
by electrochemical etching, laser engraving, or laser dot matrix marking in accordance with SAE AS478-7A2, -
15A3, or -15B2. Marking with the manufacturer’s name (or logo) and part number in addition to the CAGEC
and PIN is optional but shall be restricted to the end with the CAGEC.
3.7.1 C OMPOSITION -A—Connector tubes shall be anodized in accordance with AMS 2470 or MIL-A-8625, Type I,
Class 1 unless otherwise specified.
3.7.2 C OMPOSITION -F AND COMPOS ITION S—Connector tubes shall be passivated in accordance with AMS-QQ-P-
35.
3.8 Workmanship—Connector tubes and related items shall be free of contaminants such as lint, dirt, shavings
and burrs, sharp edges or any other defects that could make the part unsatisfactory for the purpose intended.
4.1 General Requirements—Inspection and testing for material mechanical properties, chemical composition,
and other requirements shall be as specified in the applicable material specifications. Unless otherwise
specified by the procuring activity, connector tubes shall be examined for conformance to the requirements for
construction (3.4), surface finish (3.5), marking (3.6), corrosion protection (3.7), and workmanship (3.8).
Unless otherwise specified by the procuring activity, the sample plan for quality assurance shall be in
accordance with ASQ Z1.4 single sampling, general inspection level I, AQL 0.015.
4.2 Chemical Analysis—Unless otherwise specified by the procuring activity, a chemical analysis shall be
conducted on each lot of raw material used in manufacturing connector tubes to verify conformance to the
applicable material specification.
5. Notes—This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful but is not
mandatory.
5.1 Material Designations—UNS numbers are in accordance with SAE HS-1086. Aluminum temper
designations are in accordance with ASME H35.1.
5.2 Counterbores—For connector tube installations, the counterbore dimensions of Figure A1 and Table A1 are
recommended.
5.3 Applications—Connector tubes and related items may be suitable for use in systems operating at pressures
exceeding 21 MPa (3045 psi) when supported by design analysis. The O-ring glands for the connector tubes
are designed in accordance with SAE AS 4716 for single back-up rings.
5.4 Restrictor, Check and Relief Valve Inserts for Connector Tubes—The tubes described in Figure 3 and
Table 2 are designed to accept restrictor, check or relief valves. Not all of the available products of the
established diameter will always fit within the length of the tube bores. In such cases, connecting passages
must provide sufficient clearance for the protruding ends; i.e., at least equal to the maximum ∅B1 and ∅B2
dimensions, as applicable. Consult product manufacturers, The Lee Company (www.microhydraulics.com)
and Crissair, Inc. (www.crissair.com) or other manufacturers of similar parts for recommendations as to
products that may be satisfactorily installed.

5.5 Differences from MIL-C-24714—This specification and part standard is intended to replace Military
Specifications MIL-C-24714 and MIL-C-24714/1. SAE J24714 part numbers are interchangeable with
M24714/1 part numbers with the same dash numbers. (A “M” prefix was used for the military part numbers
and a “J” prefix is used to designate the SAE part numbers. The ”/1” from the Military part number has been
deleted since J24714 has no separate specification sheet.) Dimensions herein are similar to the dimensions in
MIL-C-24714/1. The outside diameter (dimension A in Table 1) and length (dimension C) of the parts are
unchanged. The gland inside diameter and gland width (dimensions D and E in Table 1) of some parts have
been changed to more closely conform to SAE AS 4716. Some changes have been made to the dimensions
for the tubes for restictors, check valves and relief valves to accommodate additional configurations. The tubes
herein meet the 0.127 mm (0.005 in) minimum squeeze goal of AS 4716 except for dash numbers 010, 114,
117, 124, and 128. These dash numbers have a minimum O-ring squeeze of approximately 0.1 mm (0.004 in)
in order to use standard gland inside diameters identified in SAE AS 4716.

SAE J24714 Issued OCT2001
Rationale—Not applicable.
Application—This SAE Standard identifies the material and dimensional requirements for component
connector tubes and related items for use in fluid power components. Connector tubes are also
identified as quills, ferrules or transfer tubes. Connector tubes are used to connect fluid passages within
a component or to connect one component to another; for example, connecting control valves to
subplates. Related items include plugs, undrilled connector tubes and connector tubes for internal check
valves and restrictors.
