Overview table of measuring procedures and their extended measuring
uncertainties achievable with ULM Opal and ULM Rubin according to
DIN EN ISO 14253-1

The linear measurement uncertainty readings stated above have been determined in
compliance with DIN EN ISO 14253-1 (refer to Appendix for considered uncertainty
portions). K=2 has been selected for the extension factor “k“.

For calculation of extended measuring uncertainty values, the factors shown for each
measurement procedure in the table above have to be introduced in this equation formula:
u95 = ( A + K ∗ L ) µm where: A = constant term in µm
K = const. factor of length-
dependent term
L = length of measuring device
displacement in mm

In terms of test & measuring conditions, restrictions apply in the same way as specified in
the User Manual.

The test data provided above are valid for the following temperatures:

1. For devices MPEE1 = (0.3 +L/500) µm: At 20°C ± 2 K

with Gradient: 0. K / hour

2. For devices MPEE1=(0.3 +L/1500) µm: At 20°C ± 0.5 K

with Gradient: 0.2 K / hour

3. For devices MPEE1=(0.1 + L/2000)µm: At 20°C ± 0.1 K

with Gradient: 0.1 K/ hour

The quoted measuring uncertainty values can only be achieved if temperature-induced

measuring errors are corrected. For devices with MPEE1 = (0.3 + L/1500) µm and
MPEE1 = (0.1 + L/2000) µm, this correction is performed with the help of a temperature
measurement system (ALMEMO or TEMP 10/12) supplied by Mahr.

In addition, we have to point out that the above stated measuring uncertainty values can
only be reached by trained operating personnel with proper hands-on experience.

Annex:
Uncertainties taken into account

1. Uncertainties in the measurement of gauge blocks

The details of the permitted MPEE1 = length measurement deviation for the ULM
series in accordance with VDI/VDE 2617 Sheet. 2.1 and ISO 10360-2 takes the
following uncertainty components into account in the outside length
measurement of steel gauge blocks with spherical segment contact tips. These
apply under the environmental conditions specified for each type of device.

Secondary conditions already included:

Normal distribution was determined or assumed for all uncertainties. The

permitted MPEE1 = length measurement deviation as per DIN EN ISO 14253-
1Bb1 section 5 and 8 was determined from these components.
Proof that this total length measurement deviation is being kept within is
provided in accordance with the calibration regulations drawn up by Mahr for
the ULM series, based on VDI/VDE 2617 Sheet 2.1 and ISO 10360-2.

1.1 Uncertainty components for the constant section

• Interpolation errors of the encoder

• Uncertainty of the CAA correction
• Resolution of the encoder
• Residual alignment errors of the test piece and the contact tips
• Sampling uncertainty
• Residual errors in flattening correction as result of measuring force fluctuations
• Base bed bending as result of test piece mass and moving loads of measuring
headstock and counter block
• Travel deviations between measuring headstock and counter block on base bed
• Travel deviations of the measuring headstock slide
• Mismatch and angle deviation of measuring axis of measuring headstock and
counter block in terms of length and height
• Possible mismatch between measuring axis and encoder axis as result of tolerances
• Travel errors of test piece table in x, y and z axes where these influence the test
result

1.2 Uncertainty components for length-related section

• Uncertainty as result of temperature instability of encoder

• Uncertainty resulting from expansion coefficient of encoder
• Uncertainty of calibration of calibration standard

Annex: Uncertainties taken into account

2. Uncertainty components for other measurement procedures:

The following technology-related tolerances have been taken into account in determining
the extended measurement uncertainty data in addition to the information already given in
points 1.1 and 1.2:
• Coupling errors of the transition pieces, callipers and contact tips to the measuring
axis after the stipulated alignment
• Alignment errors of the callipers between the calliper seat and measuring ball
remaining after alignment, assuming that calibration has been undertaken using an
adjustment ring with a diameter similar to that of the test piece (especially in the
case of small diameters)
• Permitted roughness in the measuring attachments
• Spherical deviations in the measuring balls supplied by us
• The uncertainties for adjustment rings, measuring balls and measuring wires already
included in the table under "comments" for the individual measuring procedures
• Uncertainty in the tilt and flattening correction according to Berndt in thread
measurements (assuming a regular thread with a gearing angle of 60°)
