Objectives:
• To provide an introduction to contaminant transport processes, and site assessment
techniques,
• To learn about the design and selection of remediation techniques
Topics covered:
• Sources and types of contamination (Chapter 1 GE; Chapters 1 and 5 BHWM)
• Physico-chemical characteristics of contaminants (Chapter 2 GE; Chapter 2 BHWM)
• Introduction to subsurface transport of contaminants (Chapters 2 and 9 GE, Chapter 3
BHWM)
• Overview of policies, programs, guidelines and legislation regarding the
rehabilitation of contaminated sites in Quebec (Chapter 2 HWM, MDDELCC
guidelines)
• Soil and groundwater remediation systems (Chapter 3 GE, Chapter 11 BHWM)
• Brownfields, land disposal and urban waste management (Chapter 7 GE, Chapters 7
and 11 BHWM)
• Industrial, resource, agriculture and marine environment (Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 8 GE)
• Remediation principles and techniques (Chapter 11, GE)
• Natural attenuation (Chapter 10 GE, Chapter 11, BHWM)

Marking scheme:
CIVI 6491: Two or three assignments (25%), project and short presentation for CIVI 6491 (20%
+ oral presentation with questions (5%)) and final exam (50%)

CIVI 469: Two or three assignments (25%), labs (25%), and final exam (50%)

Final exam will take place during class time, 1 week before the end of the semester.
