Lesson 1: Provinces and Regions of the Philippines

Study Focus – Concept Map (p. 7) & Table (pp. 9-13)
 Province - a part of a large portion of land that
covers a number of towns or municipalities
 City - a large town or area with defined boundaries
and local government, usually an urban area
 Region – composed of different specific places
(usually provinces) which share a common
characteristic
 Regionalization – process of assigning group of
places to a region
Why is there a need for regionalization?
- For the national government to effectively
administer or manage the places in providing
government services;
- To directly manage the development of each
place through the local government; and
- To easily maintain peace and order and
implement laws.
Trivia: The Philippines is now composed of 18 regions with
Negros Island Region (NIR) being added as of May 29,
2015 as former Pres. Benigno Aquino III signed the
Executive Order #183.
Provinces under NIR:
- Negros Occidental
- Negros Oriental
The Philippines is an archipelago
– composed of many group of islands.
Three (3) big island groups:
1. Luzon – largest and most populous island; home to
Manila (Capital of the Philippines – seat of
government and center of trade and industry)
2. Visayas – cradle of the country (has a lot of small
scattered islands); mostly known for its tropical
islands
3. Mindanao - known as the land of promise because
of its rich biodiversity and natural resources; also
rich in agriculture
Known places by its tag names and the regions where they
belong:
1. Weaver’s Paradise – Mountain Province (CAR)
2. Heritage Village of the Philippines – Ilocos Sur (Region 1)
3. Rice Granary of the Philippines – Nueva Ecija (Region 3)
4. Mango Capital of the Philippines – Guimaras (Region 6)
5. Queen City of the South – Cebu (Region 7)
6. Sugar Capital of the Philippines – Negros Occidental(NIR)
7. Asia’s Latin City – Zamboanga City (Region 9)
8. Durian Capital of the Philippines – Davao (Region 11)
9. The Surfing Capital of the Philippines – Surigao del Norte
