Silent Meditation
I Cannot Think of Them as Dead
Frederick L. Hosmer, 1882

I cannot think of them as dead who walk with me no more;

Along the path of life I tread they are but gone before;
they are but gone before.

And still their silent ministry within my heart has place

as when on earth they walked with me and met me face to face,
and met me face to face.

Their lives are made for ever mine; what they to me

have been has left henceforth its seal and sign engraven deep within,
engraven deep within.

Mine are they by an ownership nor time nor death can free;
For God has given to love to keep its own eternally,
Its own eternally.

As We Gather/The Steadfast Love of the Lord

Mike Fay (Maranatha)
Cantor 1: You have called us by Your Spirit into worship
In this temple You have set our hearts aflame
As we lay our hearts upon Your holy altar
We'll be blessed in Jesus' name.
All: We’ll be blessed in Jesus’ name.

Cantor 2: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,

His mercies never come to an end,
They are new every morning, new every morning
Great is Thy faithfulness, (Oh Lord)
All: Great is Thy faithfulness.

Spirit of Gentleness
Words & Music: James K. Manley, 1976

Cantors: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness blow thro’ the wilderness calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness stir me from placidness,
wind, wind on the sea.
Cantor 3: You moved on the waters. You call to the deep.
Then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep.
And over the eons you called to each thing.
“Awake on your slumbers and rise on your wings.”

All: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness blow thro’ the wilderness calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness stir me from placidness,
wind, wind on the sea.

As We Gather/The Steadfast Love of the Lord

Cantor 4: Let us cleanse our hearts as we begin to worship

Let us fill our hearts with love for You and sing
Open up our eyes so we may come to know You
And unto us the Spirit bring.
All: And unto us the Spirit bring.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end,
They are new every morning, new every morning
Great is Thy faithfulness, (Oh Lord)
Great is Thy faithfulness.

Praise
Sing Praise to God for Life
Words: Bill Walace, New Zealand
Music: Kenyan Melody; arr. Alison Carey
HFJ, Hymn 372

Sing praise to God, sing praise to God for life,

for beauty, hope and love, for tenderness and grace,
sing praise to God, sing praise to God for life
with all of earth sing the praise of God’s life.

With all our heart we’ll love the world with Christ
Each person in this world, each creature of the earth
With all our heart we’ll love the one who hates
And in their heart find a part of our self.

Through all our life we’ll love the God who care,
We’ll love the God who cares and Spirit of all care
Through all our life we’ll serve the God who cares
And sing God’s praise with our eyes, hands, and hearts.

Moment of Silence

Affirming our Faith All

We believe the resurrection of Jesus has overcome the power of death and gives
assurance of life after death. And we look forward to His coming again in all fullness and
glory to make all creation new and to gather all the faithful under God’s kingdom.

The Act of Remembrance and Celebration of the Church Workers’ Life

Jesus Christ, Workers’ Lord

Byung Soo Oh, Korea; tr. T. Tom Lee; Para. Elise Shoemaker

Jesus Christ, workers’ Lord, we are servants to you.

This wondrous world, all of the earth, all creation is yours.
We would work, helping to grow lovely flowers so rare.
Labor and toil, joined with your gifts, bring fresh fruits of love.
Workers we, giving our lives in full service to you.
With freedom blessed, under your rule, citizens all are we.
On the fields sowing the grain, harvest soon we’ll reap;
In factories, making the tools, tools to meet our need.

Royal are we, working to serve Jesus, Savior and King.

One family living in peace partners sharing the earth.
Tools in hand we have reaped rich harvest of grain.
By grace of God, we will receive gifts enough for all.

This lost world, in God’s name, we would reclaim in love.

New life is brought, marvelous gift, all inherit the earth.
Now may we from the dust fertile land restore,
That there shall come God’s paradise, Life from death shall arise!
Prayer
L: Let us pray together and be faced with our finitude with the words of David in the
thirty ninth Psalm. Let us pray.
“Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a few handbreadths,
and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight.
Surely everyone stands as a mere breath.
M: Surely everyone goes about like a shadow.
Surely nothing they are in turmoil;
they heap up, and do not know who will gather.
L: And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool.
M: I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.
L: Remove your stroke from me; I am worn down by the blows of your hand.
M: You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is dear
to them; surely everyone is a mere breath.
All: Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; do not hold your peace at my
tears. For I am your passing guest, an alien, like all my forebears.
Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again,
before I depart and am no more.” (Ps. 39.4-13)

Hymn
Give Thanks for Life
SINE NOMINE
Words: Shirley Erena Murray, 1986
Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1906
Chalice Hymnal (1995), Hymn 649

Give thanks for life, the measure of our days,

Mortal, we pass through beauty that decays,
Yet sing to God our hope, our love, our praise,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Give thanks for those who made their life a light
Caught from the Christ-flame, bursting through the night,
Who touched the truth, who burned for what is right,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

And for our own, our living and our dead,

Thanks for the love by which our life is fed,
A love not changed by time or death or dread,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Give thanks for hope, that like the wheat, the grain
Lying in darkness, does its life retain
In resurrection to grow green again.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
