BS Psychology 2

1. Is an individual’s development based on nature or nature?

The nature or nurture topic is said to be one of the key debates in developmental
psychology. It has been one of the sources of great interest to developmental
psychologists and is topic to research. To be able to provide a concrete stand on this, one
must understand the complexity behind development of an individual. Some psychologist
believed that nurture is the driving force of development. However, some says otherwise.
Objectively speaking, both nature and nurture plays a major role in development of an
individual. These two ways o development interact with each other in a direct or indirect
means. Nature and nurture are thus knitted together in an almost seamless way to direct
the course and pattern of early development, with this mutual relationship taking a range
of possible forms (Karmiloff-Smith, 1999; Ramus, 2006; Pennington et al., 2008). For
example, children with genes involved in musical skills may seek out or be offered music
experiences which reinforce these tendencies. In any case, the dividing line between the
effects of genes and those of environment may well be undetectable, since both forces are
so closely intertwined in shaping human development.

2. Is maturation the same as development?

As far as I can I remember during our first year, maturation and development is
different. When we say maturation, it is the changes as result of time or aging. The best
example for this is physical maturation. We all know that our body becomes mature as
we get older. When our body hits puberty, we experience the deepening of voice for male
and developing of breast and enlargement of hips for female. On the other side,
development is the progressive series of changes that occurs in our life. The most
appropriate example of this is Erik Erikson's theory psychosocial development. It was
shown there that we are constantly developing different virtues such as wisdom and hope
in each stage if there is a success. For instance, during our infancy stage, we are not able
to utter words clearly and express our thoughts through words. However due to some
changes such as learning the language and use of words, we can articulate our ideas.
Thus, there is a development occurred.
