uncountable nouns.
2) Write sentences using countable and uncountable
nouns.

Countable nouns
Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers. They have a singular
and a plural form. The singular form can use the determiner "a" or "an". If you want to
ask about the quantity of a countable noun, you ask "How many?" combined with the
plural countable noun.
Singular Plural
one dog two dogs
one horse two horses
one man two men
one idea two ideas
one shop two shops
Examples:
She has three dogs.
I own a house.
I would like two books please.
How many friends do you have?
Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns are for the things that we cannot count with numbers. They may
be the names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical objects that are too small or
too amorphous to be counted (liquids, powders, gases, etc.). Uncountable nouns are
used with a singular verb. They usually do not have a plural form.
Examples
tea water rice beauty fear money safety
11
Modul PdPR English Form 1
SMK Bahang
We cannot use a/an with these nouns. To express a quantity of an uncountable noun,
use a word or expression like some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of , or else use
an exact measurement like a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an
hour of, a day of. If you want to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun, you ask
"How much?"
Examples
There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease.
He gave me a great deal of advice before my interview.
Can you give me some information about uncountable nouns?
He did not have much sugar left.
Measure 1 cup of water, 300g of flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt.

ACTIVITY 1
I even think one day we’ll have robot friends. In Japan today, robot engineers
are making robots to help old people and to keep them company.
They will vacuum the floor, wash the dishes, perhaps even drive our cars.
It’s still early days. I’d say we are another 20 to 30 years away from robots
being everywhere in our lives.
Maybe one day we won’t be able to tell robots and humans apart. Maybe they’ll
take over the world.
2
Modul PdPR English Form 1

ACTIVITY 2
Japanese tsstnicies have created the world's first news-reading robots. They really look and
act like human beings. The android rcsetnwsae even sounded human and had a sense of
humour. The scientists showed two robots to eetprsrro in Tokyo. One of them is called
"Kodomoroid". This word joins the Japanese for child, "kodomo," with the English word
"android". The other robot is called "Otonoaroid" – the combination of the Japanese word for
adult with "nadordi". The first pieces of news read by the robots were on an imaginary
earthquake in Tokyo and a raid by the FBI. The robots' creator is a leading orsotbic
professor, Hiroshi Ishiguro. He did not say when robots would read the news for real.
Robots are big eusissbn in Japan. Many companies spend a lot of money on research and
development to make robots better and better. The Japanese have a very eivtsipo image of
robots. They think they are both helpful and cute. In the West, people think of them as a little
scary. They worry that robots will take over the rldwo one day and control us. Professor
Ishiguro told reporters that robots are very important. He said: "We will have more and more
robots in our lives in the euturf." He added that robots are now not so expensive and so are
increasingly becoming a part of everyday life in Japan: "Robots are now becoming affordable
- no different from owning a potpla," he said.

Inside the inspection Chamber each one went to his own special section. The Chief gave

“Perfect specimens, sir,” said the Head of Psychology Section. “They react like humans.”
“Well, gentlemen”, summed up the Chief Controller when they had all finished, “it looks as

“After all these years of failure, I can’t tell you how relieved I am,” the Chief observed.
”It’s going to make a lot of difference to our lives, having these robots!”
Down in Transit Section the robots sat quietly talking. “Did you hear what they called us?”
said one of them. “Perfect.”
“And you know what that means! They’re not going to break us up this time. They’ll
produce us in thousands!”
The robots smiled at the thought. “I think,” said the other one, “our moment has come!”
