Online shopping is all the rage nowadays. The number of online shoppers is
increasing every day as shopping is a breeze and bargains are irresistible. Shopping
has never been easier or more convenient. All you need to do is to browse through the
e-commerce stores to find what you are looking for.

WHY DO PEOPLE SHOP ONLINE?

• They offer a wide variety of products.
• You can shop in comfort at home away from crowds and queues.

WHAT ARE THE DOWNSIDES?

• The website might be unreliable. So, use a website familiar to family and friends.
• You might end up with fake or counterfeit goods from bogus online shops.

uncountable nouns.
2) Write sentences using countable and uncountable
nouns.

and 2.

Nota berkaitan topik (Notes)

Countable nouns
Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers. They have a singular
and a plural form. The singular form can use the determiner "a" or "an". If you want to
ask about the quantity of a countable noun, you ask "How many?" combined with the
plural countable noun.

Singular Plural
one dog two dogs
one horse two horses
one man two men
one idea two ideas
one shop two shops

Examples:
 She has three dogs.
 I own a house.
 I would like two books please.
 How many friends do you have?

Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns are for the things that we cannot count with numbers. They may
be the names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical objects that are too small or
too amorphous to be counted (liquids, powders, gases, etc.). Uncountable nouns are
used with a singular verb. They usually do not have a plural form.

Examples
tea water rice beauty fear money safety

sugar air knowledge anger love research evidence

11
Modul PdPR English Form 1
SMK Bahang

We cannot use a/an with these nouns. To express a quantity of an uncountable noun,
use a word or expression like some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of , or else use
an exact measurement like a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an
hour of, a day of. If you want to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun, you ask
"How much?"

Examples

 There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease.
 He gave me a great deal of advice before my interview.
 Can you give me some information about uncountable nouns?
 He did not have much sugar left.
 Measure 1 cup of water, 300g of flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt.

8. Include your name at the end of the message

***** Points to Ponder

A writing, especially a narrative can be memorable if descriptive language is
used. Even though adjectives are used to describe nouns, you must know how
to use them effectively to enhance your writing.
a) Avoid using general adjectives such as nice or great and use adjectives that
are specific instead. If you are describing a person, you may mention that
the person is handsome and stunning.
b) Use describing words that show more than the appearance. For example,
when describing a building, instead of saying that it is old, you may say that it
stands longer than time and is full of history.
c) Balance description with narration, dialogue, or action. If possible, avoid
describing something in such a way that it comes off as writing a list.

Number the sentences in the correct order.

I even think one day we’ll have robot friends. In Japan today, robot engineers
are making robots to help old people and to keep them company.

In the future, we will all have robots.

They will vacuum the floor, wash the dishes, perhaps even drive our cars.

What will happen to us when the world is full of robots?

A long time ago, robots belonged to science fiction.

It’s still early days. I’d say we are another 20 to 30 years away from robots
being everywhere in our lives.

There’ll be no jobs. McDonalds will be full of smiling robots.

Today, robots are real, and they are helping us.

Maybe one day we won’t be able to tell robots and humans apart. Maybe they’ll
take over the world.

Children loved looking at movies with robots.

Listen to an article about Japanese Robot News Reader.

Listen here --> https://youtu.be/TRzO5OvRvDk Scan this QR code

Japanese tsstnicies have created the world's first news-reading robots. They really look and

act like human beings. The android rcsetnwsae even sounded human and had a sense of

humour. The scientists showed two robots to eetprsrro in Tokyo. One of them is called

"Kodomoroid". This word joins the Japanese for child, "kodomo," with the English word
"android". The other robot is called "Otonoaroid" – the combination of the Japanese word for
adult with "nadordi". The first pieces of news read by the robots were on an imaginary

earthquake in Tokyo and a raid by the FBI. The robots' creator is a leading orsotbic

professor, Hiroshi Ishiguro. He did not say when robots would read the news for real.
Robots are big eusissbn in Japan. Many companies spend a lot of money on research and

development to make robots better and better. The Japanese have a very eivtsipo image of

robots. They think they are both helpful and cute. In the West, people think of them as a little
scary. They worry that robots will take over the rldwo one day and control us. Professor

Ishiguro told reporters that robots are very important. He said: "We will have more and more
robots in our lives in the euturf." He added that robots are now not so expensive and so are

increasingly becoming a part of everyday life in Japan: "Robots are now becoming affordable
- no different from owning a potpla," he said.

The phone rang in the Chief Controller’s office “The Inspection

Committee is waiting, sir,” he was told. “We’ll begin as soon as
you join us.”

“I’ll be right along,” the Chief replied. He was a tired old man.

“I hear we’ve done it at last,” remarked one of them.

“Let’s decide afterwards,” replied the Chief cautiously.

Inside the inspection Chamber each one went to his own special section. The Chief gave
a signal, the robots were brought in and the tests began. Work continued throughout the
day without a break. It was five o’clock when the Committee reassembled.

“Well, gentlemen,” said the Chief, “may I have your verdicts?”

“We can’t hope for anything better than this,” said the Head of Design Section. “You
couldn’t tell they weren’t human!”

“Agreed,” said the Chief Medical Adviser. “No defects at all.”

“Psychology Section?”

“Perfect specimens, sir,” said the Head of Psychology Section. “They react like humans.”

“Well, gentlemen”, summed up the Chief Controller when they had all finished, “it looks as
if we’ve produced the perfect robot at last! I’d like to sign a production order straight
away. How many shall we order?” The number finally agreed was ten thousand.

“After all these years of failure, I can’t tell you how relieved I am,” the Chief observed.
”It’s going to make a lot of difference to our lives, having these robots!”

Down in Transit Section the robots sat quietly talking. “Did you hear what they called us?”
said one of them. “Perfect.”

“And you know what that means! They’re not going to break us up this time. They’ll
produce us in thousands!”

The robots smiled at the thought. “I think,” said the other one, “our moment has come!”
And long into the night they discussed their plans for the future of the world.
