This the last chapter of my article, in this chapter I will answer some
question that were asked many times before.
Question, which oil is of higher quality, 10W40 or 20W50?
The simple answer is, 10W40 and or 20W50 has nothing to do with oil
quality, but it has direct relationship with environment temperature, as
mentioned in chapter four.
Question: If oil color changes to black, what does this mean?
If this happens in short time, then maybe you are using incorrect oil
grade or may be engine blow‐by is higher that the acceptable range, also
it is possible that the engine is getting hot for a reason or another but if
this happens after using the oil for long time, thin this normal because
one of oil duties is to clean engine internal parts including the carbon
formed by combustion, and that is a valid reason to change into black
color, which we call SOOTING.
Question: should I change oil filter every time we get oil changed?
The answer is YES, for a simple reason, it is known that oil filter trap
carbon, dirt and sediment, if you change oil only and ignore changing oil
filter, the dirt and carbon will contaminate the fresh oil.
Question: What is the suitable change oil interval?
The best answer is available by Engine dealer / Distributor, and it is based
on the depletion of TBN, Now let us elaborate about TBN.
TBN stands for Total Base Number, it is known that “acid” is produced by
combustion process which can damage engine components, that is why
the oil manufacture companies add additives contains alkaline materials
to neutralize the acid, code of this alkaline additives is the number
mentioned in the oil container (see photo), this code is reduce by engine
running hours till it depleted and we have to change oil.
