The Engage-Study-
Activate (ESA)
Method of Teaching
Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) is
the most effective teaching
methodology. Teachers who use
ESA can productively organize
their lessons. Through ESA,
students are focused and highly
motivated to learn.
The Engage Phase – Warming Up
It is essential to always start a lesson with the engage phase.
It is here where students start starting and thinking in English.
Before learning new content, students need to prepare for
learning English. Games, showing pictures, discussions,
listening to music, brainstorming vocabulary and storytelling
are some excellent activities to engage and immerse
students in the class.
The Study Phase – Learning New Things
This phase is mainly the board work of the lesson. It is here
where students will learn or review English language topics.
Teachers can use textbooks, study materials, videos and
drilling exercises to help students learn and use the English
language accurately. Other activities include gap fill quizzes,
matching exercises and word order arrangement.
The Activate Phase – Using English Practically
The final aspect of an ESL lesson is the activate phase, where
students use what they have learned in activities such as
role-plays, dialogues, debates and surveys.

The purpose of the activate phase is to apply the topics

learned in the study phase in a realistic situation. By doing
this, students will begin to use the English language. As with
the engage phase, it is vital that every student participates
and speaks during the activities.
PROJECT BASED LEARNING
Project-Based-Learning is a method in which students learn
though completing a real-world project. The project is
completed over a period of time and is an opportunity for
students to demostrate their knowledge and skills and apply
them in a practical context, as well as learning from each
other.
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Collaborative Learning is an approach in which groups of
learners work together to complete a task, solve a problem or
create a product. The collaborative task can be outlined and
explained to the students; however, the responsibility for
checking the tasks are understood and completed
appropriately lies with them. Similarly, each participant in the
group is responsible for not only their action but the completion
of the final product. This in turn encourages exploratory talk
within the group on how the work will be completed.
CHALLENGE BASED LEARNING
Challenge-based Learning is a collaborative experience in
which students identify and propose a solution, then
implement and evaluate it, and finally culminate in a public
presentation of a final product. The holistic process
encourages students to identify their approach to a problem,
develop the material and then refect on their learning
process.

WHAT ARE THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS
Our world is changing before our eyes. Technological
advances, societal and economic developments and hyper-
connected globalization mean that our students face an
exciting yet unpredictable future. The new technologies and
types of employment they will encounter are unknown both
to them and to us - the adults that shape their education.
this poses the questions: How can we effectively prepare
our students for success in a future we cannot predict?
