Department of Electrical Engineering Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Dear Student, Greetings from Department of Electrical Engineering, IISc, Bangalore. You are being invited to appear for research interviews at IISc, based on your performance in GATE and/or your academic record. For the final selection, performance in the interview will be decisive. This letter provides you with some relevant information on the interview. 1. Our Expectation: Essentially, we seek students who possess the innate ability to think and logically address a question, not merely answer from memory. So, emphasis is on what you understood, rather than what you memorized. 2. Interview Structure: On arrival, you will fill a form to indicate whether you will like to be interviewed by COMMITTEE I (Power Systems, Power Electronics, High Voltage Engineering & Power Apparatus) or COMMITTEE II (DSP, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Multimedia, Sensor Networks). In addition, you will be asked to indicate your preferences for the subject areas (within a Committee) in which you wish to do research. If selected, you may be asked to work in any of the areas you indicated. You can choose either of the two committees for your interview irrespective of your BE specialization. It is advised that you visit www.ee.iisc.ernet.in, to know about the research pursued in the department. 3. What to Read: The interview consists of two parts. In the first part candidates will be examined on some of the general subjects, viz., Engineering maths, circuits, systems, controls etc. The second part will be more specific and intends to examine your knowledge in the subjects that you would have studied and which are relevant to the areas in which you wish to pursue research. You are advised to prepare yourself for answering questions in some of the relevant subjects and some topics in Maths. 4. Direct Ph.D. Program: We can admit students with only a BE degree directly for Ph.D. if their performance in the interview is very good. It is expected to take 5-6 years to complete the Ph.D. degree. The selection process would be relatively more rigorous. At the time of interview students can indicate whether they would like to be considered for the direct Ph.D. program. We trust we have given you the required information. Nevertheless, you are welcome to contact me or any faculty member, if you need further clarifications. With our very best wishes.
