Minister D: The war kept aside, the cost of the extravagant court at the immense palace of
Versailles is also adding to the total debt.

Louis:Do you think I should increase the taxes? Do you have any objections?

Minister B: No my lord, but passing these taxes will need other estates' approval. May I order all
the estates general to attend the meeting?

Louis: Yes

of the estates general to pass proposals for new taxes.

Louis:[breaking the silence] Good morning to all. I have invited you all to pass a law which will
increase the taxes as the debt only seems to increase.

Citizen C: I am sorry to interrupt, but we, the third estate, demand that the voting shall now be
conducted by the assembly as a whole, where each member will get one vote.

Louis: I am afraid as I can not let that happen.

Citizen D: Then we will have to take actions accordingly!

😲
[The third estate leaves the room. There is once again pin drop silence. Everyone is shocked

seethed with turmoil.

the ripe crops?

Citizen D:[shocked tone] No I didn't know that! Let us go and destroy some chateaux and teach
them a lesson.

many parts of the nation???

Citizen A: Yes, I think we should flee to other countries because I don't feel safe here.

Citizen D: Hey Louis xvi, your rule should be over !!!!

Citizen C: Stop your rule!!!

Louis xvi: Let the citizens come in.

[Citizen running inside, everyone is angry]

Louis : I have heard all your protests and your complaints. I will give you permission to form one
decree!

Narrator: On the night of 4 August 1789, the assembly passed a decree abolishing the feudal
system of obligations and taxes. As a result, the government acquired at least 2 billion livres….

Scene 6
[Meeting room, citizen g,h,c,f and Louis sitting]

Citizen C: We have now completed the draft of the constitution.

Louis: Well done, but can you tell me about it briefly?

Citizen G: Almost 2 years have been taken to complete this constitution. Its main objective is to
limit the power of the monarch.

Citizen A: These powers have now been separated and assigned to different institutions- the
legislature, executive and judiciary instead of giving them to only one person.

Citizen H: We have now decided that only the men above 25 years of age who pay high taxes
are now entitled to vote, thus, are called active citizens.

Louis xvi: But what about the other men who are below 25 years of age, the women and
children?

Citizen A: They will be given the title of passive citizens thus are not entitled to vote.

Narrator: Added to this, the rights such as right to life, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion,
etc., were established as 'natural and inalienable' rights.

Scene 7
[Jean Paul reading his newspaper]

Narrator: Now, let's understand the people's opinions during the draft of the constitution.
Jean paul: The task of representing the people has been given to the rich since the poor will
never be improved by peaceful means alone. The laws will last only as long as the people agree
to obey them. And when they have managed to cast off the yoke of the aristocrats, they will do
the same to the other owners of wealth.
______

Scene 8
[ Everyone standing in a line showing the political symbols]

Narrator: Now let's know about the political symbols in the old regime that held great
importance.

Citizen A: This is the broken chain. Chains were used to fetter slaves. A broken chain stands for
the act of becoming free

Citizen G:This is the bundle of rods or fasces. One rod can be easily broken, but not an entire
bundle. Therefore, Strength lies in unity.

Citizen H:This is the eye within a triangle radiating light. The all seeing eye stands for
knowledge. The rays of the sun will drive away the clouds of ignorance.

Citizen D: this is the Sceptre which is a symbol of royal power

Citizen F: This is a snake biting its tail to form a ring. Thus creating a symbol of Eternity because
a ring has neither beginning nor end.

Citizen G: This is the Red Phrygian cap which is a cap worn by a slave upon becoming free.

Narrator : These are the colours blue-white-red. These are the national colours of France.

Jean paul: This is a winged woman which is the personification of the law.

Citizen C: This is the Law Tablet. The law is the same for all,
and all are equal before it.
