1. Upon his accession in 1774, Louis XI found an empty treasury. What were the reasons behind
the financial crisis in France
Ans:In 1774,when Louis XVI assended the throne of France,he found ana empty treasury. Long
years of war had drained the financial resources of the country. The cost of maintaining an
extravagant court at Vasailles and a huge army was emense . ... These were the reasons behind
the financial crisis in France.
2. How was French Society organized? What privileges did certain sections of the society enjoy?
Ans:The society in the France was divided into three states,
Clergy
Nobility
The rest of the population

The 90% of the population were peasants in which only the clergy, nobilities and some rich
people owned the land and remaining were very poor.

The privileges enjoyed by the certain section of the society were;


They were not giving taxes.
The church was also collecting the taxes known as tithes.
And the nobles were collecting feudal dues from the third estate peasants.

``Social disparity was one of the main causes of the French Revolution.`` Justify by giving
examples.
3. Give a brief description on Subsistence Crisis.
Ans:The reasons that led to subsistence crisis are (i) The population of France rose from about 23
million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789 which led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains.
(ii) Production of grains could not keep pace with the increasing demand.
6. Why is the Declaration of the Rights of man and citizen regarded as a revolutionary document
Ans:Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen is regarded as a revolutionary document
because:
It abolished the privileges and power given to the French feudal classes i.e. First Estate and
Second Estate.
It provided equal distribution of the burdens of taxation and rights to public property among all
citizens.
The Declaration emphasized equality before law and freedom of speech and press.Every citizen
has right to speak, print and express.
