Focus Questions:

1. What assessment methods did the teacher use in her teaching?

2. For what purposes did she use each assessment method?

SCENARIO:

Ms. Dela Cruz’s Grade 8 Math class is discussing about Graphing Linear Inequalities in Two
Variables. She begins the lesson with a class quiz bee where students answer questions on
linear equalities using their show-me boards. The activity helps her to check the student’s
prerequisite knowledge about the lesson to adapt her teaching plan. She takes note of
students’ answers to see how well they are doing, and based on their scores, decide what to do
next. Seeing that the class got most of the items correctly, Ms. Dela Cruz decides to discuss the
lesson.

She starts the discussion by posing a problem, giving the students clues to help them solve it,
and raising questions to lead them to the important concepts. She asks the students to show
their solution and to explain or prove their answers so she can monitor their understanding.
She watches and listens closely to students’ answers and explanations, so she can
immediately validate their responses, and take appropriate actions, such as providing feedback
or giving more examples, to ensure that they are learning the right concepts. When she is sure
that they have understood the lesson well based on their answers to the questions, she leads
the class to do a think-pair-share activity.

In this think-pair-share activity, Ms. Dela Cruz gives each student an activity sheet that contains
a problem set. She then asks the students to do the activity sheet individually, and then
instructs them to pair up and discuss their answers with a classmate. As students discuss with
their partners, she moves around to observe and listen to their conversations. By doing so,
she is able to monitor their thinking and offer scaffolding where necessary. Afterwards, she
requires the students to write a brief explanation of their answers on their activity sheets. The
activity sheets are collected right after and the results will be used in planning and designing
the next lesson.

She ends the class with a quiz to evaluate each student's performance. Their scores will form
part of their final grades for the quarter.
