THE EXCESSIVE IMPORTANCE THAT IS GIVEN TO THE

IMAGE IN SOCIETY

Why does everything turn around the image? Why are good qualities and
intelligence not seen? Why does the image now a requirement that must be met? It is
almost unacceptable to know that the image is overrated. In a certain point, to see the
image of someone could be interesting how good a person looks. When paying a lot of
attention to the image of someone, that person would feel observed and criticized. The
person would feel bad for the transmitted image. Unfortunately, there are people who
think the image is essential to have a role in the society, or to fit inside a social group.
Some people think if someone does not look good, the person will not get what the
person wants. The image is just a presentation letter. It is not the clothing to wear every
day. Of course, the image is good to catch the interest of other people. The image is just
an image. No more. Nowadays, the image is like a lifestyle. The world is a place where
the beauty and the good image are necessary to get a job, and talent and efficiency are in
a second place. So, it is a good idea to know why is the image in society very judged,
the image should not define nobody as a person, and why should the image be a
priority. Those issues around the image are common in today´s world. The image now
has a big influence in many different cultures, and the influence is not good for
everyone. It is known the time is changing, and people are changing too. Can the image
help or harm? Go ahead.

Although some people transmit a good image, those are criticized. Anyway,
the image in society is very judged. “We are based on the image to judge people without
really taking into account their personality, their way of thinking, to say, to act… we
forget about the most important thing: what they can contribute”. (Vilches and Cepeda,
2015, line 3 to 4). Unfortunately, everything turns around the image. The image is more
important than personality or what it can be contributed. The image is so overrated that

if someone wants to make friends, the person has to wear clothes which are trend. The
person has to give a good first impression. That is why some young people do what it is
possible to change their own and given image. It is not rare to see many girls who go to
a plastic surgeon in order to change the shape of their body. More booty, more formed
legs, and a good structure of the rest of the body. It is because the excessive importance
of the image. If a girl does not have a sculptural body, the girl has to have a plastic
surgery to look fine and to please people. A thin, sculptural and formed body and a
pretty face have been a beauty ideal for a long time. Men and women are very judged
because of the image they show. Especially women were, are and will be judged by
society in general terms. Women are the most affected by a perfect image that they have
to met completely. Women have to look well all time even to stay home. Women have
to get exercise to have a sculptural body and if possible, to have a plastic surgery to
achieve stupid stereotypes created through time by the same society. Image is important
to get a job, to be in a relationship, to belong to a social group or to make friends. In a
few words, image is important for each step that is given. Many young people have a
low self-esteem caused by the standards given by society. Many factors are responsible
in the way of thinking of society. For example: social networking, the TV, the internet,
beauty magazines and newspapers show pictures of handsome men and beautiful
women in order to make people convince the importance of the image and the health of
physical aspects. It is not strange to see people who imitate those ideals.

While some people have the thought that indicates the image is everything, other
people think the image should not define nobody as a person. “The society I which we
live invites to grow more outside than the interiority, having more than being, external
beauty on the interior. The important thing is not what we are, but as we present”.
(Muñoz, 2014, p. 8). The most important in society is what the image shows, not the
personality, values and talent someone has. It is amazing how society has become all in
a beauty competition who wears better and fashion. Everything has become a walkway

or a red carpet, seeing who gives the best impression. The image is an appearance which
cheats everyone. The image can cheat, but the intelligence and qualities cannot cheat.
With the image, people can assign others what they think they are, not who they really
are. For example: if a girl wears pants and long loose t-shirts, people may think she is
lesbian without knowing her sexual orientation. Even if a boy wears pastel colors, or he
does not like clothes which is trend, they think he is unappropriated. He does not wear
fashion. Or even the boy is gay. The world is neither Victoria Secret, Versace, Dolce
Gabbana, Fashion Nova nor Gucci. Most people have to leave those stupid thoughts
about the image. Nor famous people wear with expensive clothes to catch the attention
of their fans. Some famous people wear with simple but pretty clothes, and they always
look fine. In society should be created a law which claims that the talent and experience
are obligatory to get a job, and the image should pass by a second place. In schools is
very necessary the potential that each student can give for developing a good learning,
not the image. In universities the same. To do an admission exam, the student has to
show all the knowledge. In neither item says that the image is the only thing a student
need. Many people who criticize other people cause of the image should be punished.
There is nothing so respectful than accept to other people whatever they wear or they
look. It does not matter the kind of accessories or make up. Who cares the type of
clothing, the haircut or the make up?

Even though the image should not be idolatrized, many people continue
insisting that the image should be a priority. “The physical aspect goes by way, and
today is an excessive importance. Letting us take on more than one occasion only by the
image that the other (great error) are not available”. (Martinez, 2010, par. 10). Well, it is
understandable, clear and more than acceptable that people have to wear according to
the occasion. People have to look fine when going to a survey job, but giving too much
importance to the image is very ridiculous. In many companies the image is the only
thing that is taken into account. Beauty magazines have burned the way of thinking of

most people. It is impossible to believe that exist companies which pay employers to
look at the image of people who are looking for a job. Those employers have to leave
the ambition of money an do their work that really is. The employers should be more
professional. Besides, if those employers because of their intelligence, they must show
their intelligence. Please, mature! Change the thought and think for better, not for
worse. Make the difference. It is century XXI, and stereotypes must be left in the past,
where they belong to. Stereotypes must not care anyone. Everyone has the straight of
being what they want, and respect the way of being of everybody. Does it become so
hard to respect others of how they are seen? Does it become so hard to give no more
importance to the image of someone? It should be recognized that it is being very cruel
with other people? It is not the appearance, is the essence. Do not let that appearance
cheats. For example: a lawyer who wears fine would be corrupt, and a person who
wears humble is a very wonderful person. A person with tattoos is the most generous in
the neighborhood. Unfortunately, there are many prejudices around people with tattoos.
They are known as criminals and ruthless people. Nobody has to be discriminated in
neither moment cause of the image. Everyone has to respect others whatever they are.
The most important should be the different values, the personality, the experience and
the wisdom. All the beauty cannot with the wisdom. Intelligence continues being, but
the beauty is corrupt. It is becoming harder and harder for young people to accept
themselves what they are. If so, the essence and the true being got lost. It should not be
pleased people. If some people think about it, good luck with too much beauty they
have, or they may think they have.

In conclusion, the image in society is very criticized, especially image of men

and women. The image in society must not define nobody as a person. It should not be
given no more importance to the personal image. The image should not be necessary or
obligatory. Business managers or owners of companies must be thought that the
experience, the level of knowledge, the delivery and everything that is of vital

contribution for companies. In the world there are people who feel and realize that
among all they are damaged without knowing they are being insensitive. It is possible to
emphasize that it is not the Hall of Fame. It is necessary to put the feet on the Earth. It is
no needed to pay more attention to the media. Media encourage the population to
consume everything they advertise on the TV. Be robust, thin, with or without body
hair, people deserve to be respected and accepted as their genes dictate. It has to let
other people be happy, and life will thank the gesture. It should be free from stereotypes
and if possible, delete them so that everyone can be as it is decided to be. Between less
is more. Everything must start for loving oneself, and in this way, there will be no one
to make a change of look. It is okay that someone should arrange and not seem pad dose
all life. The art of simple things is better. The image should not continue anymore being
a requirement to achieve goals. In few words, the image should not care anyone
anymore. The image is just an image. No more than that. All this is better when it is
given a balance. It is not the appearance, is the essence. It is not the clothes, is the class.
It is not the money. It is the education. Most of the time good people are the one who
have tattoos in their body, and bad people are the one who go on every Sunday to the
church.
