Gospel of St. Matthew 11: 2-11

When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ,  Come, Holy Spirit, whisper in my heart!
he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question,
"Are you the one who is to come,
or should we look for another?"
Jesus said to them in reply,
"Go and tell John what you hear and see:
the blind regain their sight,

the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed,

the deaf hear,
the dead are raised,
and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."

As they were going off,
Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John,

"What did you go out to the desert to see?

A reed swayed by the wind?
Then what did you go out to see?
Someone dressed in fine clothing?
Go and tell them what you’ve heard and seen!

LECTIO: Read the passage slowly; let each word rest in your heart.

Gospel of St. Matthew 1:18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,

but before they lived together,

she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,

yet unwilling to expose her to shame,

decided to divorce her quietly.

Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
ORATIO: Prayerfully share your thoughts and feelings with God.
"Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the
prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall name him Emmanuel,   CONTEMPLATIO: Listen closely for God’s voice. R

which means "God is with us."

he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him

and took his wife into his home.
