5. MEDICAL FACILITIES
A doctor visits the hostel every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
College also has a tie up with Powai Polyclinic. MNLU students have to pay a nominal amount of Rs
80/- to get a medical check-up.

A counsellor visits the college premises on 6 days of the week (all days except Sunday) between 4:00
PM and 6:00 PM. We urge you to consult the counsellor if you feel like you require some help, support
and guidance.

PRO TIP: Powai Polyclinic is subsidised, but not too great. We suggest you find an
alternative!
S. SPORTS / GAMES
We have a Foosball, Snooker and Table Tennis table in the college building and Cricket and
Badminton can be played with make-do facilities within the hostel premises

However if one wishes to play football or basketball, there are alternative arrangements. For football,
one can book a slot at A Team Sports, Supreme Business Park (1.4 kms away) for Rs 1134/- for half
an hour or go to Hakone Entertainment Centre (700 metres away), which is a more pocket friendly
alternative. And, if you want to play basketball, there’s a cheaper option. Hiranandani Foundation
School (800 metres away) has a basketball court that students are allowed to use for free.

For a jog or a walk, you can go to Heritage Park which is at a walking distance (1.1 km) and fitness
freaks can go to Golds Gym and Cult Fitness which are also very close by.

6. INTERNET
Wi - Fi facilities are available in college and in the hostel. We have 2 connections in the hostel - a
leased line of 100 MBPS and a 50 MBPS broadband connection.

PRO TIP - The Wi-Fis are extremely whimsical and often, our trusty Manohar Sir needs to be
called to repair them. Manohar Sir - +91 81692 76549

7. LAUNDRY
The Laundry man (Sukant) comes to the hostel on alternate days between 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM. You
have to give him 4 kgs of clothes and he charges Rs 200/- to wash and iron them.
Sukant (Laundromat) - +91 80979 00720

PRO TIP: If you don’t have 4 kgs of clothes to give, you can combine your clothes with that
of another students and give it to him together.

8. CLASSES
We have six subjects per semester. There are six lectures (one of each subject) every day and each
lecture is for 50 minutes. College starts at 8:00 AM and goes on till 1:30 PM with a half an hour snack
break from 10:30 - 11:00.
In the break, you can visit the cafeteria on the third floor of the college building where you can get
egg, chips, biscuits, poha/idli, missal pav, dosa. You can also go to the vada pav aunty who stands
below the college premises.

Also, we have a 5 day working week – the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month are off. And in the weeks
that don’t have a Saturday off, the Wednesday is a holiday. (yes, it’s a weird system!)

PRO TIP: As difficult as it sounds, try and wake up at 7 - 7:30 and attend your classes.
College gives us 5 marks for attendance and you don’t want to lose out on them.

9. ACADEMICS
MNLU Mumbai follows a semester system. The odd semester begins at the end of July and continues
till the end of November with a 5 day break for Diwali. The even semester begins at the end of January
and continues till the end of May.

At the end of every semester we have an internship break that lasts for 45 days – the first is in the
months of December and January and second one is in the months of June and July.

10. GRADING
We have six subjects per semester and each subject is evaluated out of 100 marks. 30 marks are for
projects/research papers, 5 marks for class participation, 5 marks for attendance (you get 5 marks if
you have 90% attendance, 4 marks for 85% attendance, 3 marks for 80% attendance, 2 marks for 75%
attendance and if you have less than 75% attendance you aren’t allowed to write the end semester
examination), 10 marks for our mid semester exams and 50 marks for the end semester exams.

In the odd semester, the mid sems are generally in September and the end sems are in November and
in the even semester, the mid sems are in March and the end sems are in May.

11. MOOTING
For a college that’s barely 5 years old, we’ve done exceptionally well in moots. Winning, reaching the
finals and being semi-finalists in prestigious national and international moot court competitions. The
University gives us project extensions, reimburses us for travel expenses and provides several respites
to students who are mooting.
The Moot Court Society is entrusted with the responsibility of organising the Intra Moot Court
Competition and the Novice Intra Moot Court Competition which take place in the month of August
and January respectively. According to the score allotted to you in these intra competitions, you can
form a team for an external competition.

PRO TIP:
# 1 Moots are an integral part of your college life. You make a lifetime of memories and
gather heaps of knowledge while mooting. We urge you to participate in the intra moots from
the first year itself. It’s not as daunting as it sounds!
# 2 Also, mooting doesn’t form part of our curriculum and no one’s really “taught” how to
moot, but we’re sure your seniors will be more than happy to guide you.

12. LIBRARY
Unlike most colleges, our library is only open from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM (one of the downsides of
not having a permanent campus). Additionally, it remains closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturday and all
Sundays. However, during exams, the library is open every day.

The library is well stocked and two or three copies of most books are generally available. In case the
library doesn’t have a book, and you require it for a moot/other competition, you can request the
library committee to buy it (do this well in advance!).

Students are allowed to borrow a book for 7 days and unless you reissue the book, a fine of Rs 2/- (per
day) is levied. Also, only three books can be issued at a time. The library also has 4- 5 desktops that
you can work on.

PRO TIP: If an exams or moot is approaching, library books magically disappear. Be sure to
get your hands on a book before this situation arises!

13. RESOURCES
Currently, we have access to JStor, HeinOnline, SCC Online, Lexis Nexis, LawSuit, Oxford University
Press Law Database, Oxford Reports on International Law, Cengage and Westlaw

You can also get remote access to these resources via our VPN.
14. PRINTER
In order to avail of the printing facilities, you need to pay a minimum of Rs 200 to the Finance
Committee and keep refilling the amount as and when its used up. A print/photocopy costs Rs 0.35
per page.

PRO TIP: Remember to carry your ID Cards with you!

15. STUDENT BODY COUNCIL (SBC)

The SBC acts as a means of communication between the students and the administration, helping us
redress our problems and convey our concerns. It consists of 4 members - the President, the Vice
President, the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary.

The SBC elections take place in September and are one of the most awaited events of the year. There’s
propaganda, politics, manifestos, speeches and campaigning - just a notch below your average Lok
Sabha Election.

PRO TIP: The position of Deputy Secretary is reserved for a first year. Excited?

16. SOCIETIES
There are 5 Societies that function under the aegis of the SBC - the Alternative Dispute Resolution
Society, the Moot Court Society, the Sports Committee, the Gender and Sexuality Forum and the
Academic and Debating Society. Members of each committee will come to your classroom and orient
you with their functions and activities.

17. INTERNSHIP CELL

The Internship Cell is one of the most important committees and is vital to our success as a university
of national importance. The Cell is responsible for securing internships with law firms, judges and
lawyers. In the past, the Internship Cell has gotten students internships with the judges of the Bombay
High Court, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, J Sagar Associates, Khaitan and many other tier-two law
firms.
18. ABHIKRAMA
Our College festival is one of the most awaited events of the year. It takes place in the month of
March/April and spans over two days of fun, laughter and bonhomie. In the past there have been
PUBG, Snooker, Foosball, Cricket, Football and Table Tennis tournaments. There’s also a treasure
hunt, a Bollywood quiz and a JAM (Just a Minute). On the first night of Abhikrama, we have a Cultural
Event (start brushing up your dancing, singing, acting skills) and on the second night we have
something that we like to call Blend (read as prom). Abhikrama is one of the few times in law school
that you’ll see students from all the batches congregating and letting their hair down. Don’t miss it!

19. ZEST & OTHER EXTRA CURRICULARS

Zest is our college’s Foundation Day that we celebrate each year on the 10th of October. We
commemorate the University’s inception by organising a small function where we call judges, Vice
Chancellors of other NLUs and other dignitaries. At night, we organise a cultural event where students
gather, and sing, dance, put up plays and recite poetry.

Additionally, our Cultural Society is very active and tries to organise and celebrate every festival. We
celebrate Holi, Ganpati, Republic Day, Ambedkar Jayanti, and Independence Day. (we have semester
breaks/vacations during Eid, Diwali and Christmas)

Galleria
Galleria and its iconic archway are unmissable when you come to MNLU. Its only 2 minutes away
from the hostel and somewhat of a haven for us. From panipuri and beer to medicines, stationery and
clothes, you’ll find everything you need.

PRO TIP: The tailor sits at Galleria till 5 PM. So if you have any last minute wardrobe
malfunctions, you’ll have to go to IIT market.

Shopping
While there’s a Westside for western apparel and a Fabindia for ethnic options in Powai itself - most
of us go to RCity for a broader range of shops.

Shops in RCity -

1. Sports & Travel - Decathlon

2. Apparel - H & M, ONLY, Biba, AND, Vero Moda, Jack & Jones, Van Heusen,
3. Electronics - Croma, Vijay Sales, Reliance Digital
4. Miscellaneous - Miniso

(the list is not exhaustive)

Movies
For an area that’s been built to be self-sufficient, Hiranandani Garden has a gaping hole. There’s no
movie theatre! The nearest cinema is at RCity, which is about 13 minutes by rickshaw/car and costs
about 50 - 60 bucks. For a cheaper (but shadier) option, you can visit the Cinepolis at Neptune Magnet
Mall, Kanjurmarg (15-20 mins away).

Eden Market
One of the liveliest streets in Hiranandani (even at 3 in the morning) is the Eden or Daffodil Market, a
short 10-minute walk from the hostel. The MNLU Parivar’s beloved Natural’s ice cream along with
various other (cheaper) food joints can be found here. Also, stationery lovers must visit Lucky Stores
which is a treasure trove of gifts, room decorations and art material.
IIT Market
Another place that’s close to our campus is the IIT Market which has almost everything that you need
- from bookstores and tailors to the best, cheapest and most refreshing juices and milkshakes (Shivam
Juice Centre).

of grocers given above) are delivered till 9:00 PM (approx).
• Portals like Amazon, Snapdeal, Myntra, BigBasket and the likes deliver to the hostel.
• Swiggy, Zomato and Ubereats deliver till 5 AM.
• Ubers and Olas are readily available

22. WEATHER
We miss a major chunk of the monsoons and winters because of our internship breaks. So, basically,
we’re in Bombay when the weather is the worst. It starts getting hot in March and becomes unbearable
in April and May. It’s also very hot in the month of October. However, February, August, September,
and November are reasonably pleasant and we Bombay children even need to wear sweaters and
jackets sometimes.

PRO TIP: Invest in a Fan or a Cooler.

23. THINGS TO PACK -

The hostel rooms are furnished with two single beds (with a mattress and pillow), curtains, one study
table, one dresser, a mirror, two cupboards and an overhead storage space. Therefore, there are a quite
a few things that you need to bring from home. And, after numerous semesters of packing and
unpacking, we’ve become quite “knowledgeable”. Here’s an indicative list of things you need to
buy/carry -

1. Bedsheet(s)
2. Towel(s)
3. At least one set of formals (white shirt + black pants + blazer + formal shoes), Umbrella(s)

a change, if need be.
# 2 You can call the Reception at and ask them to send an electrician/plumber/housekeeping
staff.

24. RAGGING
We know it sounds like a little far-fetched, but we truly are a completely "ragging free" institute. So I
guess, that’s one less that thing that you have to worry about.

This leaflet was created to provide you with information that you will need whilst preparing to coming
to MNLU or in your first few days of college. If you’ve sitting on the fence, it may also provide you
with information that will prompt you to choose MNLU as your college of choice. Please not that this
is not a University sponsored or endorsed initiative. All the information provided is to the best of our
knowledge.
