The Story

Title: You’re Beautiful Just the way You are

Settings: 21st Century, Star Academy in Manila, Philippines

Exposition:

“Stop.. That’s enough!,” Shantal shouts as she were trying to escape in the middle of the crowd where
her classmates and other students at Star Academy discriminating and bullying her. Fornunately, she ran
quickly away from them and when she noticed that she was quite far from her school, she walked slowly
but this time whenever she passed with people she noticed that everyone was looking at her, smiling
and teasing her over and over again “Fat.. Pig.. Obese.. You’re embarsing!” Before she can even react,
she wakes up from her sleep and crying.

After waking up from her nightmare, Shantal Dizon tried to forget about it and start her daily routine but
she realized that she was late so she hurried everything she needed to do so that she would not be late
for class. A 19 years old student at Star Academy and living in Manila, Philippines.

While in a hurry she luckily found her bestriend waiting outside her house and they were going to their
school together. As Shantal silently looked out the window at Zia’s private service, her bestfriend ask her
“What’s wrong? Is there any problem you want to share? I’m here to listen.” she looked at her bestfriend
and she smiled and said “No, it’s nothing. I have nightmare earlier but I’m fine now thank you.” She
stopped overthinking and began to prepare her belongings because they were close to their school.

When they arrives, the students at Star Academy began to murmer again and looked at Shantal as if she
had done something wrong and because of that, she had an idea why people were looking at her again
and that was because she was overweight, the only obese person in their school.
It’s been a few months since she went through that kind of treatment so she can’t stop to overthink
because anytime her nightmare will started to happen if her classmates and other students does not
stop teasing and bullying her.

Then one day, her fear came true because she was found alone on campus so the students began to
insult him until they gathered together that lead to Shantal to be cornered and sat down and cried in the
middle of the crowd. The students shouted the words that would lower Shantal’s self confidence “ “Fat..
Pig.. Obese.. You’re embarassing!” and “Get out of here, you don’t belong in this school, You’re fat and
ugly!”

When Shantal no longer take the insult, she shouted and said “Stop.. That’s enough! I’m only human
please stop..” and started to ran quickly away from them while crying and full of anger. Fortunately, her
bestriend Zia waiting for her outside and help her to get away from their school. As Shantal silently
looked out the window at Zia’s private service, her bestfriend cried and hug her tight and assure Shantal
that they would face the problem together and she would help her to have a huge transformation so
that she will never again experience the discrimination. “I’m just always here for you. I’ll join you in this
fight and I am glad if you will allow me to help you to get up again and show them that you are not a
very fat person but a golden and kindperson.” Zia said. After Zia said that words of encouragement,
Shantal felt relieved that she was not alone and that she had someone with her to face the problem she
is facing now.

Rising Action:

After that long and tiring day, Shantal’s self confidence decreased and she blamed herself for why she
was so overweight so she realized that she also couldn’t blame her classmate for insulting and bullying
her so when she looked at herself in the mirror and questioning herself “Why am I experiencing this kind
of bullying, all I want is to experience a good journey to my new school where I am free to socialize and
show who the real me to people.” Because of this, she became conscious of the weight of her body so it
came to her mind that she needed to find a way so that the students would no longer insult and bully
her at school.

Climax:

In order to make a huge transformation, Shantal always goes straight home from school to exercise and
doesn’t eat much to lose weight so that she won’t be harassed again and show her classmates and other
students that she can keep up no matter how much she weighs. And every time she surrenders, she
always reminds herself that “I can do this. I do it for me. The result of my hard work will change the
students of the Star Academy.” This is what Shantal reminds to herself to further motivate her to
pursue her initiated change.

There were days when her bestfriend Zia caught her to skip classes and asked where she was going,
“Where are you going? We haven’t finished our class yet.” And there are also days when Zia greets her
because they always eat together at break time, “Where do you want to eat, Shantal? What do you
want?” then Shantal always answered “I want water only or I’m full” bt the truth is that she deliberately
didn’t eat so that she wouldn’t gain weight. There are also days when Zia asked, “That’s all you’re going
to eat? Will you be satisfied in that amount of food?” then Shantal just smiled at her.

Falling Action:
There was an intense and shocking transformation in Shantal’s weight where she became more
physically fit and there was a big change in the way the students interacted with her because they were
amazed at Shantal’s endurance and perseverance to lose weight so they felt guilt for their actions and
apologized for what they had done and promised not to do it again even if she regained her previous
weight.

Resolution:

Shantal’s self-confidence increased where she had the courage to show and prove to everyone who she
really was and should not use weight to insult and demean others resulting in ending up bullying and
there was peace in her academy because of the anti-bullying campaign so that no other student would
experience what happened to her.

Conflict: Shantal encounters bullying from her classmates and lack of confidence which makes it difficult
for her to show who she really is despite being overweight.

Theme: Shantal’s journey is not only about forgiveness and acceptance, but also the courage to be
physically fit for her own good and well being.

Tone: The tone is wistful yet peaceful and moving towards acceptance.
