 Type of heating modality
 Used for bell’s palsy, pressure ulcers, and

Effects:

Procedure:
 Reflex heating

o Metal in the area to be treated
o Over the eyes
o Patient who took analgesic or narcotic drugs
prior to treatment
o Topical oils and creams applied on area to
be treated
o Blood pressure abnormalities
o Severe cardiac conditions

Traction Contraindications:
Traction is the application of force or system of
o Where motion is contraindicated

o Rheumatoid Arthritis

o Acute inflammation
o Tumors
Lumbar and Cervical Traction o Vascular condition
o Joint hypermobility
o Down’s Syndrome (laxity of AO)
o Uncontrolled hypertension
o Very old and very young patients

Precautions:

o TMJ dysfunction
o Inability to toleration a certain position for an
extended period
Effects: o Disorientation

 Elongation of muscles and ligaments


 Increased space between vertebral bodies, Extra Notes:

 Promotes relaxation of paraspinal muscles  We measure the weight of the patient
 Reduces bulging in a herniated disc
 Reduces pressure on nerve roots  Initial weight is 30% of the patient’s weight

Types of Traction:
Cervical Traction:
1. Continuous—constant low traction force
over a long period of time  Cervical traction is felt in the occiput area

2. Sustained—larger force but for shorter  Starts with 3.5 - 4 kg
