Team Versus Group
WORK GROUPS

A group that interacts primarily to share information and to make

decisions to help each group member perform within his or her area
of responsibility.

WORK TEAMS

A group whose individual efforts result in a performance that is

greater than the sum of the individual inputs.
TYPES Of TEAMS
1. Problem solving teams.
2. Self managed work teams.
3. Cross functional teams.
4. Virtual teams
Problem Solving Teams
Problem Solving Teams are temporary structures that
bring together leaders and team members from across
the organization to focus on solving a specific problem.

Self-Managed Work Teams

Self‐managed work teams are groups of employees with
all the technical skills (as well as the authority) needed
to direct and manage themselves. That is, they are
appointed to manage themselves because the team
members are those employees most familiar with a
particular aspect of the company.
Cross-Functional Teams

Employees from about the same hierarchical level, but from

different work areas, who come together to accomplish a task.
Typically, it includes employees from all levels of an organization.
For example: It may include people from finance, marketing,
operations, and human resources departments.

Virtual Teams

A virtual team usually refers to a group of individuals who work

together from different geographic locations and rely on
communication technology such as email, instant messaging, and
video or voice conferencing services in order to collaborate.
Creating Effective Teams: Diversity
How does team diversity affect team performance?
Team members are generally focused on their similarities, i.e. commonly
held information or skills. But to realize their creative potential, diverse
teams need to focus on their differences. The key is for members of
diverse teams to communicate what they uniquely know and also what
they do not know.

Group Demography
The degree to which members of a group share a common demographic
attribute, such as age, sex, race, educational level, or length of service in
the organization, and the impact of this attribute on turnover.

Cohorts
Individuals who, as part of a group, hold a common attribute.
Effects of Group Processes

Turning Individuals Into Team Players
 The Challenges
– Overcoming individual resistance to team membership.
– Countering the influence of individualistic cultures.
– Introducing teams in an organization that has historically
valued individual achievement.

 Shaping Team Players

– Selecting employees who can fulfill their team roles.
– Training employees to become team players.
– Reworking the reward system to encourage cooperative
efforts while continuing to recognize individual
contributions.
Teams and Quality Management
Team Effectiveness and Quality Management
requires that teams:

• Are small enough to be efficient and

effective.
• Are properly trained in required skills.
• Allocated enough time to work on
problems.
• Are given authority to resolve problems
and take corrective action.
• Have a designated “champion” to call on
when needed.
Beware !! Teams Aren’t Always the Answer

Three tests to see if a team fits the situation:

 Is the work complex and is there a need for different

perspectives?
 Does the work create a common purpose or set of
goals for the group that is larger than the sum of
the goals for individuals?
 Are members of the group involved in
interdependent tasks?
