What is the Jacquard Loom?

The Jacquard Loom is a


mechanical loom that
produces elaborate
designs in an
intricate weave.
It was invented by
Joseph-Marie Jacquard.
Joseph-Marie Jacquard

• Born July 7, 1752 in Lyon, France


• Son of a master silk weaver
• Learned the inner workings of the
loom during his job as a drawboy
• Exhibited his first version of a loom
for weaving figured silk in 1801

A statue in his memory was erected six years after his death in Lyon,
France in the exact same spot where they destroyed his first invention.
