THE STEP RECKONER

The Step Reckoner was one of the first

mechanical calculators invented in the
17th century. It was designed to perform
basic arithmetic calculations like addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division.
The genius behind this remarkable
invention was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz,
a German polymath and philosopher.

JAQUARD’S LOOM
• The Jacquard loom is a mechanical weaving
machine that revolutionized the textile industry
during the Industrial Revolution. It was invented by
an innovative French weaver and merchant named
Joseph-Marie Jacquard in the early 1800s. Before
the invention of the Jacquard loom, weaving was a
labor-intensive and time-consuming process that
required immense manual effort. Weavers had to
create intricate patterns by manually manipulating
each thread on a loom, which limited the complexity
and variety of designs they could produce. This
process also relied heavily on the skill and
experience of the weavers, making it difficult to
replicate patterns accurately. Joseph-Marie Jacquard
sought to simplify the weaving process and enable
highly intricate and detailed designs.

EDVAC(Electronic Discrete Variable
Automatic Computer)
• EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable
Automatic Computer) was one of the
first electronic stored-program
computers. It was designed by the
mathematician and physicist John von
Neumann, along with a team of
engineers and scientists, at the Moore
School of Electrical Engineering at
the University of Pennsylvania. Here
are some key points about EDVAC
and its inventor: EDVAC was a
significant advancement in computer
architecture as it introduced the
concept of stored programs. It had a
central processing unit (CPU) capable
of executing stored instructions. The
design of EDVAC was completed in
1945.
