8. Process of manufacture
The steel may be made by any process except that the air
‘or mixed air/oxygen, bottomblown basie converter
processes shall not be used. Inthe case of the oxygen
processest, the free nitrogen content ab determined in the
+ eastanalysis of erade 250 shall not exceed 0.008 %,
9. Chemical composition
The chemical composition ofthe steel bated on cast analysis
shall meet the requirements given in table 3 and, where
applicable, clause 11

10.2 Lengths of bars may contain flash welds uniess the
purchaser states that he has a particular application from

11. Weldability
11.1 Ail reinforcing ste's supplied in accordance with this
standare may be considered capable of being welded ifthe
‘correct procedures are followed,
Ine stools described in 11.2 and 11.3 shal be capable of

12. Effective cross-sectional area of deformed bars
12.1 For bars where the configuration is such that by visual
Inspection the erost-tnetional ara i substantially uniform
along the length of the bar, the effective cross-sectional area
‘shall be the gross cros-sectional area determined by
‘weighing and measuring toa prcision of + 0.5 %. a length
of not less than 0.5 m when:
Gross cross-sectional area {in mm)
= effective eross sectional area
Mie

where
‘Mis the mass of the bar (in kg)
Lis the length of the bar (in m).
122 For a bar where the cross sectional area varies along
its lenath. a samole not less than 0.5 m shall be weighed
Wd) and measured to a precision of + 0.5% in the as rolled
condition, and after the transverse ribs have been removed
it shall be reweighed (Mf).
12.2.1 Where the difference between the two masses
(iM — M's less than 3% of Mt the effective cross-sectional
12.2.2 Where the difference between the two masses
(MMs equal to or greater than 3% the effective cross
xetional area (in mm") shall be taken as:

where
[M's the mass of the bar with transverse tbs removed
(inks)
Lis the length of the bar (in m).
12.23 For routine test purposes a nominal ratio of
effective to gross cross-sectional area of bars covered
bby 12.2.2 shall be stated and used by the manufacturer
Users are advised to ake particular note of the requirement of BS 5135 in te exceptional cases where the carbon equivalent value derived
from the formula 11S enceede 0.2%,
