Topic:
“The Biological And Environmental Causes
of Developmental Disabilities”

There’s a correlation with the biological make-up with some

environmental influence on one`s disabilities. The disabilities of a person can
be carried by one's parents which could possibly be transmitted to the
offspring. On the other hand, the environment affects the behavior and state
of living of an individual which can correspondingly influence one's disabilities.

A birth defect in this group affects metabolic processes in the body of

an individual. For instance, phenylketonuria (PKU) occurs due to the mutation
in the gene responsible for the production of phenylalanine hydroxylase.
During metabolism, this enzyme converts phenylalanine to tyrosin. Insufficient
production of this enzyme due to a genetic defect causes phenylalanine to
build up in the body. Another disorder in this group is hypothyroidism, which is
a hormonal condition in which a genetic defect leads to the production of
antibodies that destroy the body's own tissues. In general, metabolic
conditions occur when genetic disorders impair chemical processes in the
body. This rapid genetic engineering technology facilitates the adaptation of
cell development during pregnancy. This process allows the establishment of
new DNA structures and the transfer of health genetic material from one
organism to another. In addition, in people who already have a disability, the
genetic pattern facilitates the reprogramming of faulty DNA and the
development of healthy genetic structures. Inserting an alternative copy of the
gene with editing tools will repair damage to an individual's DNA helix. Thus,
by introducing early editing technology into the embryo and applying CRISPR-
Cas9 to the DNA repair system, effectively repairing the mutated gene and
correcting related genetic developmental disorders. In general, genetic
engineering is remarkably effective for the treatment of related genetic
abnormalities.

Presently, few medical interventions can be useful in managing the

condition. Research continues with the purpose of identifying the various
solutions that can help in preventing or treating the condition. However, early
diagnosis of the condition minimizes its effects.
