Rammed earth composes of soil mix (clay/silt and
RAMMED EARTH sand/gravel), water and an optional stabilizer like
cement or lime.
Rammed earth homes are low maintenance, requiring little or no attention
for many years once built. There is no need to finish rammed earth walls
with plaster or paint, inside or out.
Each layer is about 150-203 mm in
height, which is further compacted
Rammed earth has high thermal mass and with the help of pneumatic backfill
it absorbs heat during the day and releases tamper.
it during the night. This action moderates
daily temperature variation and reduces the
need for air conditioning and heating.

It can be 3000-4000mm in height.

Rammed earth homes are low in

embodied energy, meaning only a small
amount of energy is needed to
manufacture and construct the walls.
The ratio of wall thickness to wall height
should be between 1:8 and 1:12. Due to their solid nature, rammed earth walls offer
excellent sound insulation and are insect and fire
Rammed earth is suitable for hot dry and upland climates. resistant.
MUSSEE VIA NARBO, NORMAN FOSTER
• The finished walls have a high thermal mass, which
contributes to the environmental comfort within the museum,
particularly in summer, while a substantial layer of insulation
cast into the center of the walls gives an even higher level of
thermal efficiency.
APPLICATIONS IN CONSTRUCTION
• One significant benefit of rammed earth is its ability to store heat (or thermal mass). Like concrete or brick, rammed
earth absorbs heat during the day and releases it overnight.
• This natural feature of the material moderates the daily temperature changes, reducing the need for heating and air
conditioning.
• Rammed earth is a technique for constructing foundations, floors, and walls using natural raw materials such as earth,
chalk, lime, or gravel. It is an ancient method that has been revived recently as a sustainable building method.
