a)
i. Solve 3(𝑥 − 3) = 18.
ii. When Nimal gave $200 to buy 8 books, he received a balance of $40.
Construct an equation using this information, by taking the price of a book to
be $𝑥. Find the price of a book.
b) The figure shows two frames in the shape of rectilinear plane figures, which have
been made using sticks of equal length. The length of one stick is 𝑎 𝑐𝑚.

6. As shown in the figure, a circular lamina is divided into five equal parts and an indicator is
fixed at the centre. The five parts are named A, B, C, D and E. When the indicator is rotated
freely, it stops in one of the five parts. Accordingly, find the probability of each of the
following events.
7. The following table is given the last 10 quiz scores (out of 20) for Shewon and Nathan. You
are asked to choose one of these two for your quiz team.
Shewon 2 18 3 12 20 13 1 6 5 10
Nathan 7 9 8 12 13 7 8 11 8 7
Who would you choose for the quiz team? Give reasons for your answer. (Hint: look at the
median and range).
Miles 0 5 10 15 20
Kilometers 0 7.5 15 22.5 30

i. Use the data from this table to draw a conversion graph between miles and kilometers
(Take miles on x axis).
ii. Find approximate number of kilometers for each of the following number of miles using
the graph.
i. If the price of a petrol litre is increased by $12, write down an expression in terms of
𝑥 for the price of a petrol litre after the increase in price.
ii. Write down an expression in terms of x for the balance that a person receives after
purchasing a petrol litre before the increase in price, by giving $200.
iii. A vehicle can travel 𝑦 kilometres with a petrol litre. If the vehicle travels 10
kilometers after pumping one petrol litre, write down the number of kilometers in
terms of 𝑦, that the vehicle can travel further by using the remaining petrol.
v. If 𝑥 = 160, find the values of the expressions obtained in i. and ii. separately.
