ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS.
1. MASS AND WEIGHT
The mass and weight of a school’s students in Grade 6 are given in the table below.
Student A 40 400
(a) Fill in the blanks for the missing masses and weights. Student A is already done for you. [5]

d) Calculate the following. [5]
i. An electric car works on 3 Volts. How many cells needs to be used in it?
ii. A battery-operated doll needs 9V to function. Calculate how many cells little Sarah
needs to make her doll work.
iii. Max needs 5 cells to operate his Walkman. What is the total voltage needed to make
the Walkman work?
iv. Cathy put 4 cells into her circuit which she made for her Physics experiment. If the
voltage needed is 5V, will the fan work?
v. A CD player does not work when 5 cells are attached to it. It worked only when 6
cells were attached. What is the voltage needed to make the CD player work?

(ii) Draw an illustration that shows weight and its opposite force.
7
Name the opposite force and weight with labels.

h) Solve the following problems. Draw a force diagram and show all your calculations. [8]
i. Sam pushes a box with a force of 2850 N to the right. His friend, James, pushes from the
opposite side to the left with a force of 1975 N. Calculate the resultant force.
ii. A man has a mass of 420 kg is standing on the pavement. What is the contact force, if he is not
moving? (g = 10 m/s2)
iii. Tess and Jess together are trying to move a car by pushing it. Tess pushes a car with a force of
12000 N and Jess pushes with a force of 12800 N (both are pushing in the same direction, but
friction does not make it move. Calculate the friction against the movement of the car.
(Friction = Force applied if there is no movement)
iv. Two teams are pulling a rope on opposite sides. Team A pulls with a force of 31950 N. The other
team pulls with a force of 31255N. Calculate the resultant force and write which team will win.

4. WORK DONE
a) What is ‘work done’?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. [2]
b) What is the equation to calculate the work done? Write it in words and in symbols.
In words:
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. [1]
In symbols:
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. [1]
i. Sam moves a heavy piano a distance of 29 metres. Calculate the force he has applied if the work
done is 46 800 J.
ii. Peter and his twin pulled a box a distance of 50 metres. Both of them apply a total of 700 N on
the box. Calculate the work done by Peter.
iii. The work done by a truck pulling a large tree is 150 000 J. If the force applied by the truck is 2
500 N, calculate the distance the tree was moved.
iv. A child can push with a force of 190 N. His teacher needs to move a table a distance of 10
metres. She asks a group of students to push it (Teacher does not push). If the total work done is
9500 J, how many students are in the group?
