The goal and overall purpose of a resume is to introduce your qualifications and skills
to employers. It's an informational document that tells your career story, outlining all
details in an easily read format. Resumes also hold meaning within themselves. For
example, showing a resume to an employer conveys an intent to apply for a position.
The main purpose of a covering letter is to fill in the gaps in your resume, and give a
hiring manager some insight into your professional background. The best cover letters
act as an effective marketing tool, and the product being marketed is you. Covering
letters also make it clear how you plan on using your talents and experience to benefit
your new employer.
So the purpose of the resume and the covering letter is to get an interview for a job. The
covering letter should be structured so that it encourages the interviewers to read the
resume. The covering letter should be a one-page part of you resume and should briefly
address each of the points in the job description. It should relate your experience to the
key qualifications in the job advertisement. The resume should be a simple statement
of you background and should include your name, address, school records, post-school
qualifications, membership of any professional organizations, and hobbies and personal
interests.
