GENERAL BRAKE INFORMATION
• Use the Proper Brake Fluid — Improper brake fluid will ruin the seals in the
brake system. Use only standard aircraft Mil-H-5606 red hydraulic fluid. Never
use automotive brake fluid!
• Bleed the Brakes — The best method to fill and bleed aircraft brakes is from
the bottom up. Loosely connect a 1/8" ID clear hose to the brake caliper
bleeder screw from your brake fluid source. An oil can used exclusively for this
purpose works well. Pump the oil can until the hose is full of fluid, with no air
bubbles. Tightly secure the hose to the bleeder valve, while opening it a quar-
ter turn. Pump fluid into the system until it fills the brake cylinder reservoir.
(The reservoir filler or vent cap must be open during this process). Tighten the
bleeder valve screw, remove the hose, and reseal the reservoir. Check your
work by insuring that the reservoir is full and that you have a “hard peddle.”
If you have a “soft-peddle,” pump the brakes several times. Many times that
will fix the problem. If the problem persists, drain the fluid and repeat the
above process.
• Tighten and Safety Wire the Brake Calipers — Torque the brake caliper
bolts to 80 inch-pounds, and then safety wire.
• Seat the Brake Pads — These non-asbestos organic composition brake pads
require a thin layer of glazed material at the lining friction surface in order to
provide maximum braking performance. This glazed layer is produced by the
heat generated during normal braking operations, and is maintained during the
life of the lining. Since new brake pads do not have this layer, it must be cre-
ated by the following process:
1. Heat the pads by performing a full stop from 30 - 40 mph.
2. Allow the brakes to cool for 5 - 10 minutes
3. Test the results at full static run-up. If the brakes hold, break-in is
complete. If they fail to hold, repeat steps 1 and 2 until they do.

LANDING GEAR FINISHES
Standard Finish — All Grove landing gear are hand finished to remove any
blemishes, scratches and dents that may have occured during the machin-
ing and heat treating processes. Because landing gear manufactured from
2024 T-6 has good corrosion resistant properties (as compared to 7075-T6),
no special treatment is normally required, other than an occasional good
coat of wax. If you plan to operate your aircraft in harsh conditions, or if
your gear is made from 7075-T6, you should corrosion protect your gear.

Available Options

Polishing — This is an option that you can do yourself. Tip—the entire


gear does not have to be polished, only that portion that is visible.
The hidden portion should be epoxy primed to prevent corrosion.
Polished gear is the least corrosion resistant. Care must be taken
to ensure that it always has an adequate protective coat of wax.

Anodize — Anodizing provides good corrosion protection. Because most


anodizing shops have limited-sized anodizing tanks, we can offer
anodizing only on two piece gear.

Chem Film (Alodine) — Alodine provides some corrosion protection, but


not as good as other methods such as epoxy primer. Again tank size
is a problem. We are only able to chem film two piece gear.

Finishing Tips to Protect your Investment

Painting — If you desire to paint your gear, we recommend that you use a
good epoxy primer such as RAND-O-PLATE or EPIBOND. Finish with
either epoxy or polyurethane paint.

Powder Coating — You can powder coat the gear. However, care must
be taken during the process to to keep the temperature below 375ºF
in order to not affect the heat treatment.

Corrosion Protection — We highly recommend that you corrosion protect


the unaccesable portion of the landing gear located in the fuselage
and/or wing. Suitable methods include epoxy prime, anodize, etc.

GUNDRILLED BRAKELINES
An option that is available on Grove Landing Gear is internal gundrilled brake lines. A
hole, drilled through the neutral axis of the landing gear, provides a conduit for the brake
fluid between the upper and lower parts of the landing gear. This results in a cleaner
installation (no exposed brake line), and reduced risk of brake line damage.

This is where the brake line from the
master brake cylinder attaches to the
landing gear brake line. Tell us when
ordering whether you want it to come
out the front, rear, top or bottom of the
gear, and the distance from the
centerline of the gear.
The inlet hole is finished to your specifications.
Typically we tap this to accept a 1/8" NPT fitting.
When ordering, please specify the finish you
desire: 1/8" NPT, no thread, or other.

Outlet to Brake Caliper


The exit hole to the brake caliper is located at the
bottom center of the gear. This hole is also finished to

Grooved Trailing
Grove Aircraft also offers the option of grooved
Edges trailing edges. This groove provides a protective

SPRING ALUMINUM LANDING GEAR
Spring aluminum is the ideal material for constructing landing gear for most
light aircraft. It is light weight, rugged, easy to install and maintain. Many
home-builders, as well as certified airplane manufacturers, are discovering
the benefits of spring aluminum landing gear.
A properly designed spring aluminum landing gear provides strength, dura-
bility and good handling qualities. Its physical size, geometry, taper, material,
heat treatment, etc. determine major handling characteristics of the airplane.
Because each aircraft is different, a specific, unique design must be created
for each application.

RADIUS PLATES & RADIUS BLOCKS

Spring aluminum landing gear is normally


mounted on the fuselage structure with a
shackle-type clamping system as shown in the
diagram below. With heavy loading or hard
landings, the gear strut legs deflect upward and
the center section of the gear deflects downward.
If the gear is attached rigidly to the fuselage and
not allowed to deflect (as shown in Figure 1), the
deflecting gear will transmit torsional loads to the
fuselage which can cause stress failures in the
lower longerons near the gear attach points.

To prevent this from happening, radius


plates or radius blocks should be installed
as illustrated in Figure 2. These plates, or
blocks, allow the gear to deflect without
placing a torsional load on the fuselage.
The proper radius for these plates is
critical for different landing gear configu-
rations.

How to Select the Proper Axle Shim


1. Support the aircraft in level flying attitude.
2. Chalkline the center-line of the aircraft onto the
floor. Do this by connecting a mark on the floor
from directly beneath the center of the firewall ³
(use a plumb-bob) and from directly beneath the D-1 ³
center of the tail (also using a plumb-bob).
3. Place a 36" straight edge against the outside of

the tire. It should be parallel with the floor and


approximately centered on the wheel.
4. Make a mark on the floor directly beneath each
end of the 36" straight edge. Use a plumb-bob or
square for this.
5. Measure and record distances D-1 and D-2.
6. Calculate 'D, which is the difference between
D-1 and D-2. 'D changes by 0.157" for each ¼°.

LANDING GEAR DESIGN GUIDE
When you provide us with the information on the other side of this sheet, we will be happy
to respond with design, price, and availability information. To help us design your gear,
we need to know the following:

Material Width and Thickness: We use aircraft grade 2024 or 7075 aluminum, heat
treated to T6 specifications, for most light aircraft applications. The width and
thickness of the material determines the spring rate and ultimate strength. It is
important that these values be properly chosen. If you are retro-fitting or replacing
gear to fit an existing dimension, please give us that information. Otherwise we
will recommend material width and thickness appropriate to your aircraft based on
its gross weight, wing loading, and gear geometry.

Flat Width: This is the upper flat portion of the gear, measured from inboard edge of
the upper bend radius to the inboard edge of the other upper bend radius. Typically
this is the distance between the outside of the longerons where the gear attaches to
the fuselage.

Overall Width: This is the overall outside gear width unloaded (not installed on the
aircraft). We can give you an approximate overall dimension with the aircraft at full
gross weight if you wish.

Height to Axle CL: This is the distance measured vertically from the top of the landing
gear to the center of the axle. This is also measured in the “unloaded” condition
and will decrease slightly with aircraft loading. We can also give you an approxi-
mate value for this at full gross weight.

Camber: This is the angle between the lower gear leg and vertical. This angle is built
into the gear so that at full gross weight, the camber is approximately zero degrees.
If you know what value you desire, let us know. Otherwise we will compute the
proper camber for your gear based on material width and thickness, gear geometry,
and aircraft weight.

Axle Holes: Do you want us to drill holes for your axles, or do you want to do that
yourself? We can drill axle holes for most popular axles, or not at all—just let us
know.

Trailing Edge Grooved Brake Lines: We can groove the trailing edge of the gear
leg to accept the brake line. This is a convenient way to incorporate the brake line
into the gear itself.

Gundrilled Brake Lines: A popular option is to drill a hole through the interior of the
landing gear which acts as the brake line. The increased aesthetic and protective
values are a good investment. This option virtually eliminates any risk of damage
to the brake line between the fuselage and the wheel area.
