The “to be” is a verb used to describe something or someone.

In English, it can be used to say


different things according to the context. However, the most common use of the to be verb is to talk
about names, ages, feeling, nationalities, and professions, especially when talking in the present
tense.

o For names:
She is Sheila.
o For ages:
He is 6 years old.
o For nationalities:
We are from Thailand.
o For professions:
You are a singer.
o Feelings and states. For this we use the simple tenses of the verb with a suitable adjective.
I am delighted with the news.
o It + be: we use it as a subject when we are talking about time, distance, weather, or cost. In
this use, be is always singular.
Hurry up, it’s eight thirty!
It’s thirty miles to Glasgow.
It’s cold today.
Come and visit us. It’s near your house.

The simple present tense is simple to form. Just use the base form of the verb: (I take, you
take, we take, they take) The 3rd person singular takes an -s at the end. (he takes, she
takes).

o To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions and
wishes:
I smoke (habit); I work in London (unchanging situation); London is a large city (general
truth)
o To give instructions or directions:
You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
o To express fixed arrangements, present or future:
Your exam starts at 09.00.
