Events
‘Abu Sufyan (who at that time was the leader of the Quraish) had gone on a business trip
to Syria, where he sold the goods and bought weapons to use them against the Muslims,
He was now returning from Syria with a large trading caravan belonging to the Quraish.
The Prophet # decided to intercept the caravan. Abu Sufyan got this information and
sent a messenger to Makkah asking the Makkan chiefs for help. Abu Jahl immediately
departed with an army of one thousand men and moved swiftly northward to Badr,a
village, 80 miles away from Madinah. On the way, he received another message from
Abu Sufyan, asking him to go back home because the caravan had escaped the Muslims
but Abu Jahal wanted to punish the Muslims and prevent them from intercepting any
caravans in future.
When the Holy Prophet 3 received the news that Abu Jahal was approaching with his
army, he set out towards Badr along with his three hundred and thirteen men, tW0
