Common Sense and America Crisis

Question 1

When writing common sense Paine used quotations from the bible for example he wrote that, Ye

that opposes independent now, ‘Ye know not what ye do; ye are opening a door to eternal

tyranny, by keeping vacant the seat of government’ in his writing, he begun by giving the

difference between the society and the government in general (Beck & Glenn, 132-543). He

mentioned that everything that is good or constructive and is done by people who are joined

together is wat is known as society. On the other hand, government s an institution that has a sole

purpose of protecting citizens from vices. He went ahead to give an explanation there is very

little to be gained by the colonials from the attachment that was remaining. He went ahead to

give an explanation in that, the only way commerce can be done in a good way between America

and Europe is after America gains its independence. He gave an explanation of the reason why it

was a god for American to break with Britain. The main focus of pain was about the current size

of the colonies and on the capabilities what were available during that time. The main reason for

pain give the explanation was to ensure that America gained secure and that it could prosper as

well.

The kind or argument that he makes can be considered as compelling because the main reason

for the colonies was to get profits and other gains from the countries they colonized and because

he gave an explanation on the best way in which they would gain the argument was worth

listening to.

Question 2

Based on his argument, Paine has a negative attitude towards monarchy and notion of heredity

succession. In common sense, he says that, Monarchy is unholy win the standards of God, it

oppresses the general public and that there is no guarantee to success because of the monarchy.

Additionally, he explains that heredity succession causes an unjust entitlement (Nelson & Craig,

228-250). He also gave an explanation in that; it is in rare cases that kings have the qualification

to rule and finally he explained that countries that do not have kings ae stable and happy.

Question 3

With consideration to the events and activities that took place before writing of common sense, I

believe that the activities that were taking place were the main source of influence for him to

writing the script. This is because, Americans had no freedom, they were being oppressed and

there was succession of power in the monarchy in which according to him it was wring before

God and also most of the people who became kings were not qualified to rule. That is the reason

he wrote the book believing that it would help Americans get their freedom back.

Question 4

There were arguments that Paine was not a Christina and yet most of his references were from

the bible, he claimed that ‘God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction, or

leave them unsupported to perish’. He claimed that Americans were no supposed to fear the

British because God will support them until they get the victory and there was an assurance that

they could rely on his intervention for a success on their behalf.

Question 5

When Paine uses the words, ‘these are the time that try means soul’ he basically means to test. In

a deeper explanation, it means that, they were living in a time that was testing men souls. The

situation they were living in could test men and see what they were made of. He meant that the

time was right to test those who were very patriotic to their country and those who were not.

Question 6

When he mentioned about summer solders, Paine was trying to send a message in that there are

those people who would stand and fight for their country and also there are those who could not

even stand to fight for their countries freedom (Paine &Thomas, 546-645). And they are people

who wait for the best moment in the current world referred to as ‘jumping on the bandwagon’.

There are also referred to as fair weather friends. The ramification of those who were true

patriates deserved to be thanked and loved while those who were found to be untrue patriates

deserved to be scorned.

Question 7

According to Paine & Thomas (342-31) in his summary about the fate of Torie, he explains that

a time will come when through ascertained of the character of people they will be guided through

their mischief. He further gave an explanation that, if the Brutish were unable to conquer them, it

is a clear indication that they have no ability to neither protect nor govern them. The situation

and the fate would be connecting with her and the particular situation that was in hand and that

all the connections that would with her would be an exchange of half defeat which can be

considered to be unwisely done. Finally he said that they would bring Spain and France back to

then and the only road and route that cloud be left was independence to America.

Question 8

Finally, it can be concluded that all the work that was done Thomas Paine was a key contribution

to the attainment of independence in America. This is because; through his writing work was one

of the major sources of information. Also, the two books inspired Americans to fight for the

independence of their country. Finally, the inspiration helps in determining the patriates of the

country.
