INTRODUCTION
There are three types of Bandha i.e. namely Moola, Uddiyana and Jalandhar. Bandha which
is performed for the lower body called Moola Bandha. Were Uddiyana for middle part of
body and Jalandhar Bandha is performed for the upper part of the body. Jalandhar Bandha is
one of the three important Bandhas which are essential required to be performed during
kumbhak in Pranayama.[1] Excessive pressure is developed in the lungs during Kumbhak
which raises the blood pressure. Hence it is interesting to know the effect of Jalandhar
Bandha on the blood pressure during the Kumbhak. The detailed explation regarding the
Jalandhar Bandha is given in Hath Yoga Pradipika.[2]
METHODS
30 subjects were selected from Yoga vidyadham branch Ahemadnagar. These subjects were
practicing all types of Pranayama twice every day with all three Bandhas.
Inclusion Criteria
Subjects with age group between 20 years to 60 years.
B.P. between 120/80 mm of Hg to 150/100 mm of Hg.
Health of the subject should be examined by Physician with medical certificate of good
health.
Exclusion Criteria
Subjects with systemic diseases.
Study Design
The subjects were asked to sit Padmasana (crossed leg) for one minute and the B. P. was
measured. They were asked to practice one round Purak and Kumbhak with bending the
neck and fixing the chin in the proper technique of Jalandhar Bandha i.e. to contract the
muscles of the neck and B. P. was measured, similarly B.P. was measured during
Kumbhak but with Jalandhar Bandha.
All 30 subjects had given practice of Jalandhar Bandha for 30 days in morning 6 am to 7
am & in evening 6 pm to 7 pm i.e. Two times Jalandhar Bandha is performed for a month
and systolic as well as diastolic B. P. were measured.
OBSERVATIONS
Statistical Analysis
This study was aimed to study the effect of Jalandhar Bandha on blood pressure. Blood
Pressure was noted in subject before and after the performing Jalandhar Bandha. Ho – there
is no significant descreased in Blood pressure in subject before and after the performing
Jalandhar Bandha. i.e Ho is null hypothesis H1 – there is significant decreased in Blood
pressure in subject before and after the performing Jalandhar Bandha. i.e H1 is alternative
hypothesis. Further to find the decrease in Blood pressure in subject before and after the
Jalandhar Bandha Paired t test to the quantitative data was applied. For every statistical
Table 02- Mean Blood Pressure before & after of Jalandhar Bandha.
Sr. Blood Before Jalandhar After Jalandhar After 1 month of
No. Pressure (Mean + SD) (Mean + SD) Jalandhar (Mean + SD)
1. Systolic B.P. 137.86 ± 9.91 mm of Hg 133.8 ± 8.83 mm of Hg 131.53 ± 9.46 mm of Hg
2. Diastolic B.P. 92 ± 5.85 mm of Hg 89.93 ± 5.26 mm of Hg 87.4 ± 5.78 mm of Hg
RESULT
As Paired t-test to the above statistical data shows P<0.05. It is significant decrease in blood
pressure i.e. Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure. We should reject the null hypothesis H0
and accept the alternate hypothesis H1 i.e. there is significant decrease in Blood pressure
(Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure) in subject before and after the performing Jalandhar
Bandha.
DISCUSSION
In the present study practice of Jalandhar Bandha have significant effect on the systolic and
diastolic B. P. of subjects. We come to conclusion that due to proper Jalandhar Bandha B. P.
is decreased and comes to the normal range. But it is not decreased below normal level.
Excess pressure is developed in Kumbhaka which raises the blood pressure. But if we
performed the Jalandhar bandha properly which decreases the B. P. to the normal level.
CONCLUSION
It is concluded that there is significant decrease in the Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure
by performing Jalandhar Bandha for a month on Yoga Sadhaka.
