Ship Replay
Visualise, analyse and replay historic ship movements by area, date and time.
Available to customers with AIS Premium services
Geographical Coverage
• Geographically, the whole world is covered with all AIS message from both terrestrial and satellite sources combined into a single
view in the way you will be familiar with in the live ship view.
• The data is stored minute by minute, processed every few minutes and made available for the Ship Replay feature. Positions up
to 60 minutes or so old may not yet be available for replay. The data has been collected since March 2020 and we will continue to
build an indefinite history from this point on.
• If you require simulations of earlier time periods, we, with our partners, will be happy to help on an
ad-hoc basis. Please contact your account manager for more details.
Data Limitations
• Limitations of AIS data still apply. Information is transmitted by the ship, and requires terrestrial reception with its limited range,
satellite reception which can be challenging in congested areas and other factors all still apply to Instant Replay.
• A ship track over dry land, for example, will indicate a lack of granularity in the signals received from the ship or, in rarer cases, an
SAR or coastguard aircraft transmitting positions.
Terms of Use
• The data is available subject to the normal terms and conditions of use. If you wish to use the data for litigation, we have a partner
who is able to provide a recreation with a “chain of custody” of the underlying raw data that has not gone through any of the
manipulations we use to prepare, enhance and store for the purposes of the Ship Replay feature. Please contact your account
manager for more details.

Expanded view:
• Click on date
• Use the sliders to define your
hour, minutes & seconds
• Time zone drop down
Please Note: The amount of data required to replay AIS tracks is vast. To stay
within sensible limits of data size, response time and local pc graphical
capabilities we recommend:
• A zoom level 9 or higher (the zoom level you are taking when clicking on a
ship/port)
• A single day time period for data requests
1
2. You can now begin the replay, observe the ship tracks (if set to show)
and interact with the replay.
Note: The live ships layer is automatically switched off when replay is
2 active. This will switch on again when the replay is cleared
Warning Message – An over-quota request (too much data) will indicate by how
much request is over. For example it may display “250% of maximum data
requested, please zoom in or reduce the time-range”.
This indicates that the parameters chosen are invalid, such as the start and stop
time being identical, and the request has not been able to be made. Please check
the parameters and try again.

In this example you can see one day in the Irish Sea with cargo vessels, fishing
activity, offshore support vessels and ferry traffic easily identifiable.

3. Click Save button
FAQ:
What details are saved?
• The feature does not save the data requested but the parameters you have
chosen - The current map view area, the start and end dates are saved, so you
can conveniently load the scene, request data to play again at another time.
1 Load Scenes
1. Click the Folder icon to expand the Load Scenes drop down.
2. Click to choose the Scene to load from the drop-down list.
You will notice the map zoom to the saved area, and your start/end date load
3. Click Request Data button to retrieve the data to replay
2 4. Once request success message displayed you are ready to replay the scene!
If you wish to delete the Scene, simply select and click the Delete button
Loitering
• An oxymoron, perhaps, but a reasonably reliable method of detecting the two main fishing support activities, transshipment of
catch and bunkering is to record a vessel loitering. Because fishing vessels transmit on lower power (Class B) and often with less
attention to completeness than larger ships, their STS activity can be harder to trace. The apparent answer lies in detecting one of
the STS pair, the larger vessel, and inferring from the behaviour of that ship the likelihood of an STS operation occurring.
• Refrigerated cargo vessels under 10,000GT, travelling at less than 2.5 knots and outside of territorial waters are considered
excellent possibilities for being engaged in a fishing transshipment. In this case, the second ship MMSI and IMO in the STS “pair”
are recorded as 0.
• Bunker tankers, products, and product/chemical tankers between 1,000 and 20,000 DWT are recorded when exhibiting similar
behaviour. This often indicates refueling of deep-sea fishing fleets. To be considered, the vessels must be in international waters,
travelling at less than 2.5 knots and in areas where fishing transshipments are seen. Often, a product tanker engaged in a regular
port to port trade will be recorded as they drift for repair or awaiting orders or slowing to avoid port congestion. Thus, a prudent
user will consider that multiple occurrences of this behavior, combined with the location is the best indicator that the ship is
engaged in bunkering of fishing fleets on the high seas and that occasional recordings of single ship STS operations are treated
with deep skepticism or allocated to other operations such as maintenance at sea, drifting awaiting orders or an exceptional,
rather than regular, STS operation.
Drifting
• Vessels that are not considered for the fishing support activities described previously are monitored for drifting events. That is,
they are on the high seas (not in territorial or inland waters), not showing an AIS status of moored or anchored, travelling at less
than 2.5 knots for a period of more than 4 hours. This is often indicative of waiting for orders, avoiding port congestion, avoiding
the requirement to anchor at the destination port or carrying out engine maintenance. There will seldom be cause for suspicion.
