Using Kinetic Applications in Smart Clients and Web Browsers

Article last updated: December 14, 2021 20:42

You can use Kinetic applications not only in smart (local) clients, but also in web browsers.

Show me the list of the supported browsers

Regardless of what environment you use the Kinetic in (on-premise or cloud), you can take full advantage of the web browser client - the
experience will be the same (apart from the restrictions specific to the cloud users). However, there are slight differences in what you can
access in the web client compared to the smart client.

In this article, we will cover:

Understanding the differences between the smart and web clients

Launching Web Client from within the Smart Client

In both On-Premise and Cloud environments, you can launch the browser version of Kinetic from the smart client by using the Open Kinetic
in Browser option found on the User menu.

By using this option, the smart client closes and Kinetic homepage opens in your default browser. The browser session opens in
the same company, site and workstation used in the smart client.

Getting the URL for the Web Client

The URL for your web browser client follows this format: https://<your.erp.app.server>/<erpapp>/home/, where:

<your.erp.app.server> - Your Kinetic server

<erpapp> - Your name of the Kinetic application (for example, Kinetic2021_1).

For example: https://ApplicationServer01.domain.local/Kinetic2021_1/home 

If needed, you can easily figure out the correct URL by yourself, but the process is different for on-premise and cloud users.

For the On-Premise Users:

Your server and application name display in the first part of the context indicator of your homepage.

How to set up the server to display

So, to open your application in the web browser client:

1. Copy the server and application name (starting with https://) from the context indicator of a smart client.

2. Open one of the approved browsers and paste it into the address bar. Then, add /home at the end of the address so it followes the correct
format: https://<your.erp.app.server>/<erpapp>/home, and go to that address.

3. You get redirected to the Log In page. Log in with your usual credentials.

Alternatively, you can get the URL using the .sysconfig file.

1. Open the .sysconfig file.

2. Locate the AppServerURL value node and copy the value inside "".

3. Open one of the approved browser and paste the copied value into the address bar. Then, add /home at the end of the address and open
it.

For the Cloud Users:

When you start using Kinetic Cloud, you get a welcome email with all shortcuts you might find useful.

1. Locate the Home page URL in the Shortcuts to your instance list in your welcome email and copy it.

2. Paste it into the address bar in one of the approved browsers and open the address.

Understanding the Differences Between the Smart and Web Clients

You can use all Kinetic applications that have been already converted for a specific release in both smart client and web browser. However,
there are several differences to consider.

1. Kinetic Applications: In a smart client, you can switch between the classic and Kinetic versions of the applications. In a web browser
client, you can only access the Kinetic ones. For example, when you open the smart client, your default home page is full of applications
that you can launch right away. However, a part of them that is not Kinetic yet will be grayed out in the homepage of the web browser
client, and they will become available in future releases. You can use the smart client to access them.

Also, in some Kinetic applications, you can see an option to open another application (for example, via the context menu or the Overflow
menu). If you're working in the web browser and the application you're trying to open isn't Kinetic yet, it won't launch there, so you will
also need to use the smart client to access it.

If you'd like to see the complete list of the released Kinetic forms, please check the Kinetic Applications sheet in the Kinetic
Application Release List.

2. System Monitor, Menu Maintenance, User Account Security Maintenance (along with other non-Kinetic applications) are available only
in the smart client.

3. The More Settings option is only available from the User Panel settings of the smart client home page.

Though the More Settings option that allows you update your password is only available in a smart client, you can still
change your password using a web client. If you need to change the Kinetic password for your user account, select the
Change Password option on the home page to display the Change Password panel.
