ARCH 572 – Architectural Theory and Criticism

Description

Drawing on key texts of architectural criticism, as well as from philosophy, literature, and a
range of other theories (critical, media, art, and economic), this course establishes a framework
for thinking about architecture that can be understood through both internal (disciplinary)
concerns and external (cultural) conditions. Topics covered in the course (ACTS' 18) include
studying the conceptual structure of architecture problematics (Plato's Cave, Heidegger’s Hut,
Foucault’s Prison, among others) as well as contemporary problems such as buildings, justice,
form, and development.

Class instruction mode: Online

Lecture: Wed 1:00-3:00pm

Discussion sections will be held on Wednesdays in 1-hour blocks from 3:00-5:00pm.

Please do not schedule any courses during that two-hour block on Wednesdays (3:00-5:00pm).
Students will be placed in their discussion section at the beginning of the term.
