How to Use the IMCI Chart?

1. Select the Appropriate Case Management

assessment process.
2. Proceed to the 6 main steps (in sequence) of
the IMCI case management process.

1. Assess the Child or Young Infant
2. Classify the Illness
3. Identify the Treatment
4. Treat the Child
5. Counsel the Mother
6. Give Follow-up Care
Classification of Tables
PINK ROW
! Needs urgent attention &
referral or admission for
inpatient care; a severe
classification.
YELLOW ROW
! Means the child needs
appropriate treatment.
GREEN ROW
! Means the child doesn’t
need specific treatment.

1. Assess & 2. Classify the Young Infant
! Ask the caregiver if the infant has just been delivered.
! Determine if this is an initial visit, follow-up visit for this
problem, or a well-child visit.
! Check all young infants for bacterial infections &
jaundice, congenital problems (if not newly delivered)
! Consider risk factors, HIV infection; check feeding &
growth & immunization.
! Assess caregiver’s health; Assess & manage other
problems
