“Here’s how it is!”

Machine refers to the manufacturing equipment used in the production of goods or

delivery of services. It is an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several
parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task.

In the process of selecting the type of equipment to purchase, the entrepreneur may
consider the following important elements:

1. Types of products to be produced.

2. Production system to be adopted.
3. Cost of the Equipment.
4. Capacity of the equipment.
5. Availability of spare parts in the local market.
6. Efficiency of the equipment.
7. The skills required in running the equipment.

14
Advantages of the use of machineries in production
(Article shared by Nipun S, economic discussion .net)

1. Large scale production of goods owing to the power of machines to multiply products
(e.g., mass production of different varieties of goods in modern factories);

2. Great relief to labourers owing to lessening of pain and strain on human muscle (e.g.,
cranes for the use of mechanised cranes for loading and unloading;

3. Considerable increase in the skill of productivity of labourers (e.g., higher efficiency

of farm workers working with tractors and other mechanised implements);

4. Shorter period of productions because of quick-yielding power of machines.

5. Multiplication of goods of the same standard and of the same precision (e.g.
multiplication of blades, matches, cigarettes, radio sets, electronic goods, wrist-
watches, etc. of the same standard)

6. Low cost of production and consequent low prices of standardised goods

manufactured with the help of machines;
7. Increase of intelligence and alertness of labourers owing to constant working with
machines; and

8. Correct calculation of different quantities with the help of computers and other
electronic appliances.

“Now do it!”
Directions: Match the picture in column A to the uses of each machine in column B. Write
