Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyse the level of awareness among rural communities on
the green technology. A total of 108 out of 178 households of Kampung Jalan Gula, Taiping,
Perak were selected as respondents using a purposive sampling method in 2017 based on
[25]. However, only 100 questionnaires have been returned and 8 questionnaires were
considered as unresponsive. Information was collected using a questionnaire filled by
respondents themselves. The data obtained was analysed by using 'SPSS for Windows'.
Less than 20% of respondents have a high level of awareness on the green technology but
the attitudes towards green technology among respondents are low especially those aged
50 years and above. It shown that elderly has less interest to concern about advantages of
green technology, even though they have completed their secondary school education.
Further analysis found positive and significant relationships between Awareness levels to
Knowledge, Comprehension and Attitudes. Knowledge and Comprehension related to the
green technology should be given a very high emphasis on rural communities particularly
for elderly in order to protect the environment. This study suggests that all parties should
play their respective roles including current elderly as well as future elderly who live in
rural or urban area in achieving environmental sustainability.

1. Introduction
Green technology is the development and application of products, equipment and systems
to conserve the environment and natural resources in order to minimize the negative
impact of human activities (26). Green technology is the best approach in addressing
environmental issues and economic growth. It is also in line with the main agenda of
governments around the world today who are giving priority to environmental issues,
especially the phenomenon of global warming and climate change. In this regard, the
world's population should be responsible in ensuring the world is safe and comfortable
place to live. The biggest benefit in applying green technology is to improve the quality of
life by providing more sustainable environmental quality. The negative impact on the
environment is minimal if all parties applying green technology in their life (26).
The main thrust in the Green Technology sector is to provide an education and public
awareness on green technology as well as to promote the widespread of using green
technology (26). The public awareness is not only focused on urban residents but rural
residents also should be aware to green technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is
to analyze the level of awareness among rural communities on the green technology,
particularly the elderly. Most elderly has less attention to the new things such as green
technology and their awareness on it is very low.
Many ways and emphases have been given by the government and non-government
organization (NGO) regarding to the importance of using green technology to the rural
communities such as the Go Green and Earth Hour campaigns. Rural elderly should be
exposed to the positive impact of green technology so that young generations and also
become the future elderly are also impressed with the exposure. Exposure of green
technology is very important because the majority who staying in rural area is elderly
compares to youth and they have to be a good example and attitude to the young
generation. Once elderly has open their mind for every single new thing, indirectly will
attract youth to stay in rural area because most of youths have a good exposure regarding
to green technology since they were in school level but less practiced.
Kampung Jalan Gula has been chosen as a study area because the majority of the
households are elderly compared to youth. The number of household in Kampung Jalan
Gula is 178. About 70% out of 178 households in Kampung Jalan Gula are elderly. The
problems faced by the elderly are that most of them have less interest to concern about
new things such as the advantages of green technology as long as it does not make their life
miserable even though most of them have secondary school education. The objective of this
study is to analyze the level of awareness among rural communities on the green
technology. This study is very significant since it is an effort to exposure the importance of
green technology and environmental sustainability to rural communities especially elderly
who live in Kampung Jalan Gula, Taiping, Perak and in Malaysia as a whole. This study
presented five sections which first section regarding to applying green technology in life.
While section two presented some review on green technology and third section is
regarding to method and data collection. Next are section four and five presented results
and findings of the study and conclusions, respectively.

Most respondents involved in agricultural activities, (27%), Services/Selfworking (26%)
and pensioners (20%). About 55% respondents have RM501-RM1,500 monthly income
and 53% of respondents have paid monthly electricity bills at range RM101 to RM150.
Based on Table 2, the analysis of the study on the level of respondents' knowledge on the
use of green technology. The result indicated that their knowledge on green technology
was moderate at the mean of 3.11.

of respondents disagree on item 5 'I know that using green technology can save energy and
non-renewable natural resources'. This shows that respondents not sensitive to the
importance of using green technology. While items 7, 8, 10 and 12 show 87% of
respondents are unsure of campaigns and policies introduced by the government and non-
governmental organizations. Less than 50% of respondents support the use of green

respondents answered uncertainly for item 8 'I understand the meaning of using green
technology through training / activities / campaigns ever organized'. This indicates that
respondents are not exposed to direct and indirect green campaigns. Overall, respondents'
understanding of the use of green technology is still ambiguous.

Figure 3: Percentage of Comprehension of Rural Communities on Green Technology
Table 5 shows the level of comprehension of rural communities based on age and
education. The level of comprehension of the elderly respondents (50 years and above) is
still low. This illustrates that elderly people have a low level of comprehension of 69%
although 43% of respondents have passed high school education.
Based on Table 6, the attitude of the rural communities towards the awareness of green
technology is low at 1.79. This is because the majority of respondents have less willingness
to pay more to acquire green technology products and less support the sale of green
technology products. However, most respondents have high awareness in electrical savings
based on the answers to items 4, 5, 6 and 9.

Based on Figure 4, respondents agreed to some items which are related to electricity
consumption. This indicates that respondents understand to consume electricity wisely.
This shows their awareness of the use of electricity is very high. However, based on their
questionnaires they are uncertain with the use of green technology that can reduce energy
consumption. A total of 87% (item 7) of the respondents are uncertain whether they use
energy efficient appliances or not and 91% (item 10) of respondents are uncertainty about
hybrid vehicles.

While the level of attitudes shown by the elderly also illustrates that they have a moderate
attitude on green technology, especially those with low education as shown in Table 7.
Nevertheless, elderly equal or above 50 years old who have moderate attitude towards the
use of green technology as much as 69%. Overall, the respondent’s attitude should also be
changed in order to preserve the environment.
This study also applies Pearson's correlation analysis to see the relationship between the
rural community's awareness on green technology in Table 9. There is a positive and
significant relationship between the level of awareness of the respondents on green
technology. This shows the higher the level of awareness, the higher the level of knowledge,
attitude and understanding of the rural communities.
5. Conclusion
This study shows that the level of awareness of the use of green technology is low
especially among elderly, even though most of them have completed their secondary
school. The moderate level of knowledge and comprehension among respondents on green
technology can be improved by fostering public awareness of the importance of
environmental conservation through green technology. However, level of attitude among
respondents still low. Many campaigns on green have done by government and non-
government organization (NGO) to ensure sustainable development can be achieved in
order to enhance the quality of life and healthy environment (22).
The study found that elderly is lack exposure to the importance of green technology. In
addition, they assumed that they are getting older and the requirement to concern about
environmental issues is very minimal. Therefore, all parties should play their role in
promoting and educating the rural communities in enhancing awareness related to the
green technology as stated in main thrust of green technology sector particularly to elderly.
Appreciation on environment can be nurtured among communities from pre-school to
retirement level through green technology. If present generation have high awareness level
on green technology, indirectly environmental problem can be protected for the future
generation.
