Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyse the level of awareness among rural communities on
the green technology. A total of 108 out of 178 households of Kampung Jalan Gula, Taiping,
Perak were selected as respondents using a purposive sampling method in 2017 based on
[25]. However, only 100 questionnaires have been returned and 8 questionnaires were
considered as unresponsive. Information was collected using a questionnaire filled by
respondents themselves. The data obtained was analysed by using 'SPSS for Windows'.
Less than 20% of respondents have a high level of awareness on the green technology but
the attitudes towards green technology among respondents are low especially those aged
50 years and above. It shown that elderly has less interest to concern about advantages of
green technology, even though they have completed their secondary school education.
Further analysis found positive and significant relationships between Awareness levels to
Knowledge, Comprehension and Attitudes. Knowledge and Comprehension related to the
green technology should be given a very high emphasis on rural communities particularly
for elderly in order to protect the environment. This study suggests that all parties should
play their respective roles including current elderly as well as future elderly who live in
rural or urban area in achieving environmental sustainability.

1. Introduction

Green technology is the development and application of products, equipment and systems
to conserve the environment and natural resources in order to minimize the negative
impact of human activities (26). Green technology is the best approach in addressing
environmental issues and economic growth. It is also in line with the main agenda of
governments around the world today who are giving priority to environmental issues,
especially the phenomenon of global warming and climate change. In this regard, the
world's population should be responsible in ensuring the world is safe and comfortable
place to live. The biggest benefit in applying green technology is to improve the quality of
life by providing more sustainable environmental quality. The negative impact on the
environment is minimal if all parties applying green technology in their life (26).
The main thrust in the Green Technology sector is to provide an education and public
awareness on green technology as well as to promote the widespread of using green
technology (26). The public awareness is not only focused on urban residents but rural
residents also should be aware to green technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is
to analyze the level of awareness among rural communities on the green technology,
particularly the elderly. Most elderly has less attention to the new things such as green
technology and their awareness on it is very low.
Many ways and emphases have been given by the government and non-government
organization (NGO) regarding to the importance of using green technology to the rural
communities such as the Go Green and Earth Hour campaigns. Rural elderly should be
exposed to the positive impact of green technology so that young generations and also
become the future elderly are also impressed with the exposure. Exposure of green
technology is very important because the majority who staying in rural area is elderly
compares to youth and they have to be a good example and attitude to the young
generation. Once elderly has open their mind for every single new thing, indirectly will
attract youth to stay in rural area because most of youths have a good exposure regarding
to green technology since they were in school level but less practiced.
Kampung Jalan Gula has been chosen as a study area because the majority of the
households are elderly compared to youth. The number of household in Kampung Jalan
Gula is 178. About 70% out of 178 households in Kampung Jalan Gula are elderly. The
problems faced by the elderly are that most of them have less interest to concern about
new things such as the advantages of green technology as long as it does not make their life
miserable even though most of them have secondary school education. The objective of this
study is to analyze the level of awareness among rural communities on the green
technology. This study is very significant since it is an effort to exposure the importance of
green technology and environmental sustainability to rural communities especially elderly
who live in Kampung Jalan Gula, Taiping, Perak and in Malaysia as a whole. This study
presented five sections which first section regarding to applying green technology in life.
While section two presented some review on green technology and third section is
regarding to method and data collection. Next are section four and five presented results
and findings of the study and conclusions, respectively.

2. Literature Review

Most of countries in the world have high awareness of environmental conservation

issues by looking for more efficient alternatives to reduce global warming especially in
developed countries. One of the most widely used alternatives to society is the use of green

Page 15
technology. The National Green Technology Policy is to provide direction and motivation
for Malaysians to continue their life in a healthy environment (26). Green technology is one
of the technologies that are environmentally friendly and less energy consumed compared
to other technologies [1]. The use of green technology can also limit the dependence on
fuels and electricity, but can save on non-renewable energy and natural resources. This is
because if continuous use of non-renewable resources will lead to exhaustion of energy
sources it cannot even be replaced within a short period of time. In addition, the use of
green technology can provide a better economic return to the country [2, 3, 4]. The
introduction of green technology is the best solution in meeting the growing demand for
energy in the deterioration of the environment [5,6].
[7] studies suggest that the importance and positive impacts of green environment on the
environment are highlighted. [8] found that the empowerment of green technology in
Malaysia had little impact on the practice of green public relations. [5] found that there are
several factors that lead to green technology acceptance in Malaysia. [9] studies suggest
that the green technology, product or service offered should be relevant in meeting the
needs of customers ie society as it is quite expensive. Increasing environmental awareness
in society does not guarantee their willingness to save the environment because the level of
awareness is still low, especially in developing countries [10].
Therefore, the government and non-government should take responsibility for planning
appropriate initiatives in the context of Malaysian society to promote green technology.
Next, a study on the perception of green products among consumers was conducted on the
east coast of Peninsular Malaysia by [11] found that awareness among high-educated users
of eco-friendly products is still low. However, overall respondents' perceptions of the
benefits of green products are positive [12]. While [13] found that the majority of their
respondents, 72%, showed a positive attitude toward green products around Kuala
Lumpur. [14] showed a positive impact on the acceptance of green technology to the
residents of Melaka City.
The study conducted by [15] shows that gender factors affect the willingness of
consumers to pay more for green products. In this study, women are willing to pay more
for green products than men. This shows that users who are willing to pay more for green
technology goods have a high awareness [16]. [17] summarize, green energy and
technology are expected to play an important role in the stability of the energy and
technology sustainability sector [18]. Technology also plays an important role in
sustainable development and is also used in the processing of natural resources for human
needs to improve the quality of life [19].
Development, industry, agriculture, forestry and other human activities have led to the
most significant change in the phenomenon of global warming, climate change and various
other natural disasters that have taken place [20]. Additionally, with a lack of caring and
less-responsible attitude in maintaining and preserving the environment, it is complicated
that conditions that will have a greater negative impact on the environment, including the
quality of human life are also affected. Green technology refers to environmental
technology that applies environmental science to conserve the environment and natural
resources and curb the negative effects of human activity (27).
[21] found that more than 70% of respondents in Petaling Jaya have a high level of
environmental concern for the use of high technology. While the perception of green
technology by ethnicity found there was good knowledge of the green technology
understanding factor [22]. [2] found that the level of awareness of the knowledge and
practice of Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia's (UTHM) students was at a modest level. According
to [12] students agree that green technology knowledge can give them awareness about

the importance of the environment by practicing green culture. Meanwhile, another study
conducted by [23] found that teachers 'attitude was at a positive level while teachers' green
practice was at moderate level. The findings also found that there was no significant
difference in the level of knowledge of green technology based on different areas of teacher
specialization. Some studies pay attention on green finance with to limit the funding or rise
the interest rate for polluted project so that they can pay more attention to develop green
technology to increase their awareness on environment [24].

3. Research Design and Methodology (important for research papers)

The purpose of survey study through quantitative approach is to analyze awareness

level of rural communities on green technology. This is descriptive design study. The study
was conducted at Kampung Jalan Gula, Taiping, Perak A total of 108 residents of Kampung
Jalan Gula, Taiping, Perak were selected as respondents using a purposive sampling
method in 2017. However, only 100 questionnaires have been returned and 8
questionnaires were considered as unresponsive respondents. Information was collected
using a questionnaire filled by respondents themselves. Questionnaires were divided into
four sections. The first section is the background of respondents covering information such
as age, gender, education and occupation. While the second section relates to the level of
respondent’s Awareness of the use of green technology. The third, fourth and fifth section
were measure the level of Knowledge, Attitude and Comprehension of respondents on
green technology. Respondents were given the choice of answers (Likert Scale) which is 1 =
very disagreeable, 2 = disagree, 3 = uncertain, 4 = agree, 5 = strongly agree. The reliability
value obtained for this part is 0.919 is excellent. Primary data sources are obtained from
student project paper of School of Government. Data has been analyzed using 'Statistical
Package for the Social Science for Windows' (SPSS for Windows). Descriptive statistics are
used to determine frequency, percentage and mean. Inference statistics used the Pearson
Correlation test to determine the relationship between the level of awareness on green
technology. Awareness levels are measured with '1-3 = Low', '3.1-4 = Fair' and '4.1-5 =
High'.

e. Relationship between Awareness Level of Rural Communities on Green

Technology

This study also applies Pearson's correlation analysis to see the relationship between the
rural community's awareness on green technology in Table 9. There is a positive and
significant relationship between the level of awareness of the respondents on green
technology. This shows the higher the level of awareness, the higher the level of knowledge,
attitude and understanding of the rural communities.

.814 (p = .000). Therefore, the value of r² = 0.66 (66%). This means that the relationship
between the two variables relates to Awareness and Knowledge is 66% that is moderate.
Variance r² = 0.66 (66%) indicates that 66% of Green Technology Awareness is due to
Knowledge. Thus, another 34% change in dependent variables may be caused by other
factors. This shows that there is a significant relationship between the awareness of green
technology and knowledge among villagers in respondent.
Similarly, the Pearson correlation result in Table 9 shows that there is a significant
relationship between the Awareness of green technology and Attitude ie r = .851 (High
Positive Correlation). The value obtained is r = 0.851 (p = 0.000). Therefore, the value of r²
= 0.72 (72%). This means that the relationship between the two variables relates to
Awareness and Attitude is 72%, which is a strong relationship. Variance r² = 0.72 (72%)
indicates that 72% of Green Technology Awareness is due to Attitude. Thus, another 28%
change in dependent variables may be caused by other factors. Due to the significant
relationship between the use of Green Technology Awareness and Attitude among the
respondents.
Similarly, the Pearson correlation result in Table 9 shows that there is a significant
relationship between the Consciousness of green technology and the Understanding of r =
.828 (High Positive Correlation). The value obtained is r = 0.828 (p = 0.000). Therefore, the
value of r² = 0.68 (68%). This means the relationship between the two dependent variables
Awareness of the use of green technology and understanding is 68% that is moderate.
Variance r² = .68 (68%) indicates that 68% of Green Technology Awareness is due to
Understanding. Thus, another 32% change in dependent variables may be caused by other
factors. Due to the significant relationship between the use of green technology and
understanding among rural communities, there is a significant relationship between the
Consciousness of green technology and the understanding among the respondents.
Furthermore, the Pearson correlation result in Table 9 shows that there is a significant
relationship between Knowledge and Attitude i.e. r = 0.773 (High Positive Correlation). The

relationship between the Knowledge of green technology use and the Comprehension
among the respondents.
Finally, the correlation result in Table 9 shows that there is a significant relationship
between the attitudes of using green technology and comprehension that r = 0.943 (Very
High Positive Correlation). The value obtained is r = 0.943 (p = 0.000). Therefore, the value
of r² = 0.88 (88%). This means the relationship between the two dependent variables. The
attitude of the use of green technology and the comprehension is 88% that is very strong
relationship. Variance r² = 0.88 (88%) indicates that 88% of the Green Technology Attitude
is due to Comprehension. Thus, another 12% change in dependent variables may be caused
by other factors. Thus there is a significant relationship between the attitude of using green
technology and comprehension among the respondents.

5. Conclusion

This study shows that the level of awareness of the use of green technology is low
especially among elderly, even though most of them have completed their secondary
school. The moderate level of knowledge and comprehension among respondents on green
technology can be improved by fostering public awareness of the importance of
environmental conservation through green technology. However, level of attitude among
respondents still low. Many campaigns on green have done by government and non-
government organization (NGO) to ensure sustainable development can be achieved in
order to enhance the quality of life and healthy environment (22).

The study found that elderly is lack exposure to the importance of green technology. In
addition, they assumed that they are getting older and the requirement to concern about
environmental issues is very minimal. Therefore, all parties should play their role in
promoting and educating the rural communities in enhancing awareness related to the
green technology as stated in main thrust of green technology sector particularly to elderly.
Appreciation on environment can be nurtured among communities from pre-school to
retirement level through green technology. If present generation have high awareness level
on green technology, indirectly environmental problem can be protected for the future
generation.
