 I. INTRODUCTION

The activity of translation has a long-standing tradition and has been widely practiced
throughout history, but in our rapidly changing world its role has become of
paramount importance. Nowadays, knowledge in which cultural exchanges have been
widening, has been increasingly expanding and international communication has been
intensifying, the phenomenon of translation has become fundamental. Translation
studies is an academic interdiscipline dealing with the systematic study of the theory,
description and application of translation, interpreting, and localization. As an
interdiscipline, translation studies borrows much from the various fields of study that
support translation. These include comparative literature, computer science, history,
linguistics, philology, philosophy, semiotics, and terminology. In translation
activities, what actually happens is communication between the writer and the reader
through the translator. The author acts as the sender of the message, it is captured first
by the translator, after that be transferred from source to target language, for later be
sent back to the reader. What must be maintained is how the message that goes
through the communication chain reaches the reader completely. In this case the role
of the translator is very important. As Frawley affirms, "Translating is more than a
triple matching of words, grammatical structures, and cultural contexts which in itself
would already be a formidably complex process". Such method of study expanded
the scope of translation studies enormously, opened a new field of study, thus it
enhanced a further and more comprehensive development of translation studies.

 III. CONCLUSION

In the 21st century the role of translation has become even more significant. In the
fields of education, science and technology, mass communication, commerce tourism
etc. the need for translation has increased greatly. Our multicultural and multilingual
world is at a place where it is demanding clear and efficient communication between
languages and cultures. It is one of the most effective ways of building crosscultural
bridges. A pooling and sharing of knowledge is indeed possible only when special
efforts are made to cross language boundaries. The best tool employed for this
purpose is translation which seeks special attention in our multilingual context.
Increasing translation practices is bound to create sensitivity to the massive cultural
reservoir lying in the other’s language, thus leading to the inculcation of respect for
the other in addition to evoking curiosity to know the language that contains such
literature. Translation is a faculty that brings us closer to alien cultures and societies
not only through their literatures but also their films and other electronic media
through subtitling and dubbing. Thus cultural dialoging through translation will
facilitate nation building and preservation of cultural diversity. Besides, companies,
schools, medical missions all benefit from the incorporation of translation. Not only
will you be able to reach more people than you ever realized, you will be able to
connect with them on a more effective level through the power of translation.
Translation enables effective communication between people around the world. It is
a courier for the transmission of knowledge, a protector of cultural heritage, and
essential to the development of a global economy. Highly skilled translators are key.
Translation Studies helps practitioners develop those skills.
