BACKGROUND
• Global Nutrition Report – 2016 by the World Health Organisation
(WHO) indicates that India is lagging behind in tackling malnutrition
effectively.

• 53% of Indian children were malnourished in 1990 while the


numbers have fallen to just 40% in 2015.

• Only 13% improvement occurred in last 25 years because of lack of


multi-sectoral coordination in various schemes launched by
government to tackle the problem of malnutrition.

KEY FEATURES OF PROGRAMME
• It includes many farming organizations that will be focusing on
nutrition, setting up genetic gardens for biofortified plants and
initiation of 'Zero Hunger' training. Biofortification is the idea
of breeding crops to increase their nutritional value.
• It will act as a model of integrated approach towards dealing with
hunger and malnutrition by adopting new suitable agricultural or
horticultural practices and improving upon the current practices.
• It will cover intensive training programme to identify the nutritional
maladies in each district and the appropriate remedies.
• It will help us achieve the zero hunger district goal surely and
speedily.

ABOUT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

• Officially known as "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for


Sustainable Development“.
• It is a set of 17 "Global Goals" with 169 targets.
• They are build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals
(8 goals to be achieved from 2000-2015) while including new areas
such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable
consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.
• Goal 2 - End hunger, achieve food security & improved nutrition and
promote sustainable agriculture
