Election Commission of India hosted an International Webinar on ANS - A
“Enhancing Electoral Participation of Women, PwDs & Senior Citizens:
Sharing Best Practices & New Initiatives” at New Delhi.
• The webinar marked the completion of 2 years of the Chairmanship
of the A-WEB.
• Chief Election Commissioner of India, Sushil Chandra, informed that
women’s participation in voting has surpassed men.
• Delegates from 24 countries participated in the webinar.
A-WEB
• A-WEB – Association of World Election Bodies – was established in 2013 ANS - A
in South Korea.
• A-WEB is the first of its kind international organization of election
management organizations. It undertakes capacity building programs for
the election officials of its members.
• Currently, it has 118 Election Management Bodies (EMB) from 108
countries as its members.
• A-WEB aims to promote free and fair elections for promoting democracy.

Global Nutrition Report 2021 has been released. ANS - A
• The Global Nutrition Report is a multi-stakeholder initiative,
consisting of a Stakeholder Group, Independent Expert Group and
Report Secretariat.
• It assesses the progress made towards eliminating malnutrition.

Global Scenario: ANS - A
Total 194 countries were assessed.
Lack of progress means unacceptable levels of malnutrition persist.
o 149.2 million children under 5 years of age are stunted,
o 45.4 million are wasted
o 38.9 million are overweight
o Over 40% of all men and women (2.2 billion people) are now overweight or
obese.

• 105 countries are on track to meet the target for tackling childhood ANS - A
overweight and over 1/4th countries are on track to meet stunting
and wasting targets.
• Anaemia levels are showing no progress or worsening in 161
countries.
• No country is on track to achieve the target on reducing salt intake or
to stop the rise in adult obesity.

Deaths related to poor diet – ANS - A
o Increased by 15% since 2010 - more rapidly than population
growth.
o Diet - related deaths are now responsible for more than 12 million
NCD deaths in adults.
o This is a quarter (26%) of all adult deaths each year.

o Investment required in nutrition by 2030 - US $5.7 trillion per year


o It would reach US $10.5 trillion a year by 2050.

India’s Scenario ANS - A

POSITIVES
• India is among 53 countries ‘on course’ to meet the target for stunting.
• Stunting of U5 children in India – 34% (higher than the average of Asian
region)
o Asia’s stunting levels – over 22%
• India is ‘on-course’ to meet ‘childhood overweight’ and ‘exclusive breast
feeding’ targets.
• 58% of infants in the age group 0-5 months are exclusively breastfed in
India.

NEGATIVES ANS - A

• India has made no progress on anaemia and childhood wasting.


• India is among the 161 countries which made no progress or said to be
worsening with regards to reducing anaemia. Over half of Indian women in
the age group 15-49 years are anaemic.
• There has been a rise in anaemic Indian women since 2016. In 2016, 52.6%
of Indian women were anaemic. But in 2020, 53% were found to be
anaemic.
• India is also among 23 countries that have made no progress or are
worsening on reducing ‘childhood wasting’.

• India is ‘off-course’ in meeting 7 of the 13 global nutrition targets. ANS - A

These include sodium intake, raised blood pressure (both men and
women), obesity (both men and women) and diabetes (both men and
women).
• Some 6.2% of adult (aged 18 years and over) women and 3.5% of
adult men are living with obesity in India.

Chemicals and Fertilizers Dr Mansukh Mandaviya.
• Organizers - Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals under Ministry of
Chemicals & Fertilizers, in association with the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), in a hybrid format.
• India aims to become global chemical and Petro-chemical manufacturing
hub. This Summit will help in attracting investment in India.
• Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu are
participating as Partner States in the Summit.
